now our BMWs are protected!

Where I work, there is some foot traffic because people walking are cutting through our lot, and wouldn't you know, that means break-ins. I was mad 1 1/2 yrs. ago when a guy with a 335d was pressed up against my nose!

Anyway, today I was in the head of security's office because he wanted to show me his new toy. Video surveillance. Very cool system, he is able to view the entire parking lot all at once, zoom in and out, and even zoom into cars. From what I hear, what Wal Mart has is a joke compared to this stuff. After all, there are Maseratis, Aston Martins, Bentleys, in the reserved spaces. Heaven forbid a visitor dings them.

In the back of my mind I was thinking you would definitely catch even a coworker dinging your door or bumping you. I have to admit, though, he was having too much fun with this system. give me a break, 1920x1080p, 30ips, 8 of them side-by-side in the front to show the entire parking lot, 20x optical zoom, this is crazy stuff. But seriously, the days of hit and run will one day be gone.

Haha, when I read your title I immediately thought "No way! BMW is going to cover turbos/hpfp/water pump under warranty for life?!".

It would be nice if I had one of these systems at home, I occasionally hear about kids f-ing around with people's cars around my neighborhood and it would be nice for me to have this when I get my car.

Hey when you care about your car as much as some of us do, you can never go too far. Motion sensors? Drones? Sharks with laser beams attached to their heads? All is fair in the game of "who dinged my door?"

So let's say someone dings a car. How exactly is justice going to be served? If it's a complete stranger who damages a car, how can anyone go about tracing that person..? IMO the camera is more of a placebo. It might motivate people to be more careful if it's prominently displayed but if it's just there, I don't see how it can really protect a car in the true sense of the word.. :dunno:

Video footage is ALWAYS going to come in handy - whether it's for criminal or civil purposes. I wish my parking lot had that kind of surveillance; best I can hope for is that I can make out the shape of a person

When you see it for yourself it's nuts. Those innocent Pelco cams with the black domes are only 3 megapixel, but when you combine them an entire parking lot is effectively watched. Think about it, they are network devices, any office can login and monitor and the recordings are never going away.

I dunno why some are skeptical, I kinda envision it as, "Hey Rick, someone hit my car." "I'll scan the video to see when it happened. Here it is, it's NY registration M3LOVR4EVR, looks like it's a dark blue BMW."

"Thanks Rick, that belongs to that hot shot managing director on the 6th floor. He can kiss his 250k bonus this Christmas goodbye."

I guess my point is I've seen so many hit and run posts here, and the first thing others think of is asking if there's any video. Now I've gotten to see what a modern video system actually does--this stuff is beyond HD. Some cams are 2048x1536. The software makes it a joke as far as being able to find an event, etc. We're going to reach a point where there's no point to CSI, it's all there with a mouse-click! 30 images per second....yikes.

I usually find it very hard to understand what you write. Is it just me? Lol. It takes me like 3 times of reading it to get it.
