noob on polishing, plz help!

Hi, i wanted to start polishing and detailing my own car, however I dunno how should i use the 3m tape. Can you guys plz post pics on where to tape? I tried to search tape but nothing comes up.

I tape all exterior trim and around anything you can think of that would get damaged or you don't want polish on.
