Car lost power briefly. Advice....

So driving to work yesterday I get a message on the dash saying engine overheated, stop driving. I look at oil temp gauge and see it's fine so I decided to keep going at a slow pace (had driven semi hard up to that point, but nothing crazy - have driven much harder than that with no issues at all). After about 400m of driving I lose all power. Coast to a stop, turn the engine off and pop the bonnet. Everything looks all good inside and underneath. Start her up again, everything is 100% normal. Drove to work, around on sat night, and all day today with no dramas what so ever. Had a friend scan the car and the error code in the pic came up. Anyone had this before? Something I should be worried about? Any advice on how to proceed?

Thanks!!

Your temp gauge is oil temp not water (most cars display coolant temp) the electric water pumps are prone to crapping out.

Replace thermostat and both wp hoses also imo

Thanks for all the help. Drove it to work again this morning. No problem. Don't want to change it if t was only a computer glitch (one can only hope). If it happens again it will be changed. Give my nrma membership a bit if a work out :-p

My guess is water pump, as there's no gauge for that... But can be accessed by a hidden menu, really hard process that I don't remember.

Good news for JB4 users is that I'm beta testing the water and oil temp gauges on the JB4 mobile and it's awesome to be able to monitor and log these features... Stay tuned!

I've got the JB4 mobile thing with the Bluetooth, how do you change the dashboard? Mine just displays IAT on all graphs

If the water temperature can be shown in iDrive, then it would be great.

Or is there any way to change the current oil temp reading to water temp reading?

Also wonder why BMW set it as oil temp rather than water temp?
What's the oil temp there for?

Oil temp is a far more critical parameter to display than water temp in a turbocharged engine which runs quite hot like the N54 does.

May I ask what makes it so critical?

I usually will not go more than 3k rpm if the oil temp isn't reaching 110-120'C.
and I thought that's the only reason I thought the oil temp is there for.
Is that the only purpose? or maybe to show me that the water pump is failed and engine is overheating if the oil temp going above 120'C and more.

Let's think about this for a second...

Play the question you asked out in your head here... If driving normally, and your temps are say... Double to what you'd usually expect to see considering driving and ambient temps are also the same... Would this be normal to you?

Sorry, haha, I don't really get that.

But what I thought the oil temp is to show me how hot is the engine oil so that I do not drive the car too hard before the oil eaching its ideal temp.

Yes, you are right to be monitoring this for warm up purposes, and equally so for when things aren't working as they should.

That's why I want to know if there are any other aspects that I can get to know by just reading the oil temp.

I know if the oil temp is too hot, something fails or is about to fail, what about if the oil temp is low like 80-90'C even after an hour drive? Water pump working too hard and cool down the car too efficiently!? Probably the sensor is not working properly since the water pump only kicks in once the engine oil temp reaches its ideal temp?

Sorry for all the questions but just want to see if my logic is pointing to the right direction.

The formula with diagnosing car problems and symptoms is not always x + y = z

Gauges are there as an overall visual indication.
