Thanks for the support shonuff
It looks like CANBUS is the biggest hurdle, jeff can control this electro-mechanically...it is the interface to the car's ecu that will make it difficult. more info on the xdrive is valuable |

We should just start pooling some cash together for this like Kickstarter, should start a poll to see how many members would be interested in the project and give the funds to whomever we deem worthy of the project

Kalud (another Canadian on the E90 forums) Provided some usefull info.
Including block diagrams for the communication etc. it is all do-able, it is simply a matter of development time really. Jeff can see exactly how he would control the Xdrive motor/current sensor etc. The difficulty comes in the added functionality of the CANBUS communications. That takes time, and a lot of logging and analysis. it could be done "half-assed" in no time, but to do it right would take some time. If anybody can do it its Jeff Reid and he's on the job. I was ready for bed until I came across this thread, now I feel like a kid again living in the week leading up to Christmas. This would definitely be an AWESOME present.

Didn't anybody think of doing this by coding?
I was just thinking... When items like ex. xenon headlights are added to a car you have to add VO numbers by coding to tell the car which items are installed. Xenon headlights have VO number $522. 4-wheel drive have VO number $203, so maybe removing this from the "vehicle order" will disable the power to the front wheels? I'm not willing to try this on my own car, but I hope that some of you guys can? Last edited by tonynuuk; 12-30-2012 at 06:44 PM.. |

Jeff Reid registered earlier today but he's having trouble getting permission.
Do you guys know if you have to wait or something to gain permission? Anyway as he can get permission I can tell you, he has made arrangements so that he has time to work on this in a more dedicated manner. He's been studying up on BMW canbus and looking into finding a car with xdrive. I hope he can find a car with X Drive so he can do some reverse engineering. |

Hello Guys/Gals,
I got a bit bored yesterday so I started to do some research on the system. At this point it is just learning etc., but that is where all good things begin. I'm thinking it would be easiest if I picked up a car with X Drive so I could make some measurements and see exactly what is going on electrically and in regards to vehicle communication. That's not a big deal as I'm looking for a new vehicle anyway so if I can tie it together with some R&D it is a win win situation. These projects go slow, and they take time to do properly. I know everyone gets excited but the reality is that developing something really good to control this system could take a year. Kind regards, -Jeff Reid Ps. My PM's are blocked until I get three postings so I can't receive anything until I get that out of the way. Not ignoring anyone...just unable to reply. |
