Cool Alpina reveals new D3 Bi-Turbo E92 Coupe (+ photos)

PRESS RELEASE

The new BMW ALPINA D3 Bi-Turbo Coupe

The factor with which the new D3 Coupe is best compared to its rivals is its Power-To-Weight ratio; an equation commonly applied in motor sport. But, with heavily increased personal taxation designed to encourage energy saving and lowered emissions, the calculation is assuming wider relevance to drivers - especially those in the select niche at which this latest ALPINA is aimed.

As epitomised by the D3 Coupe, gaining extra performance simply by substituting a larger engine is alien to the ALPINA philosophy. Instead, the manufacturer, working closely with BMW, maximises the sporting potential of existing units.

ALPINA engineers have taken BMW's state-of-the-art twin turbo diesel engine from the 123d and increased power to 214hp; producing more horsepower per litre than any other engine in a current BMW or BMW ALPINA road car.

'Added lightness' makes a significant further contribution to the remarkable figures achieved by the new model.

The extra power, lightness of the engine, plus additional weight saving technology means an overall power-to-weight ratio of 146hp per tonne – virtually matching BMW's own 330d Coupe.

The car is capable of 152mph and 0-62mph in 6.9 secs and yet the official fuel consumption and emission figures tell a very different story: 42-43 mpg (overall EU) .

This year, around one hundred lucky UK drivers will get all the performance and exclusivity they would expect from an ALPINA but with running costs (and, for company car drivers, benefit in kind charges) they could only dream of, until now.
ALPINA GB, part of the Sytner Group, has been the sole UK importer for ALPINA since 1983. ALPINA has worked closely with BMW since 1961, with shared warranty coverage since 1964. ALPINA was registered as an automobile manufacturer to ISO standards in 1983.

The ALPINA D3 will only be sold overseas with a base price starting at £32,950 (about $64,500).

At first, I really hated the look of this. But after about two minutes of digesting it (and ignoring the hideous green), I really like it. And the mpg numbers are insane.

$64,500? You could buy a slightly used 335 for just around half that(maybe a liitle more), and use the extra savings to buy gas more often. You would still save more on the car than you would ever save on the gas. Nice try, but it dosen't work for me.

With that kind of fuel efficiency and performance, I'd gladly buy one!

It's about saving gas which in turns saves the earth...not trying to save you gas.

Do you realize that this is in the UK, where a 335i would not even be close to half that... try much more.

1) I dont think u can get a 335 for half that in the UK even tho the most popular car in the UK is the 3 series.

2) its not aimed at people who want 335/M3 like performance (like yourself)

3) save the earth mofos.

4) it does 0-62 in 6.9 secs while getting 52mpg (astonishing)

5) its a sport tuners 1st effort at efficiency which is very honorable

And most importantly...

6) If we shut down ideas like this at their infancy, there will be nothing better that will "work for you" in the future. If this is embraced by go-greeners and efficiency freaks (which i hope it is) there will be a faster, more efficient D3 in the near future.

I dunno about you, I would loooooove to own a 335 or M3 that gets even twice the gas millage I'm getting now in the M3 (12mpg). Ideas like this will get us there.

It would not save much money being the diesel is $5 around here. The stickers reminds me of the eighties where the stickers mimic circuitry. Technology and performance. Green for saving the world, I guess. Diesel? 64k is about close to a more gorgeous M3. For Probably the same value with a regular gasoline vehicle since the prices is slightly going down, I don't think it is worth it for that price tag. Maybe 41k.

$64k for ugly pinstripes, ugly wheels, and slow. Get a 335I. Faster, better wheels, no ugly letterling or stripes, and the extra 20k goes a long way in making back the gas mileage.
