Is low coolant level normal for a 2011 328 xi?

So my low coolant light comes on this morning and I take the car into Parkview BMW and they tell me it just needs a top up.

I'm thinking WTF???? Since when did cars start consuming coolant? In all my past automotive experiences, low coolant was a cracked block or leak in the rad system.

Is this normal???

Thanks For the feed back guys!!

Same thing happened on my 2011. Dealer gave me some 50/50 bmw coolant mix so I could top off when engine was cold, and was on my way. No issue since top up. I inquired about this as well, and I can't remember the exact wording, but something another the lines of the system having blow off if over-pressurized, so over time all of this blow-off may lead to the coolant level dropping. typically would happen a few months after the cap would have been removed and them replaced during service.

The coolant cap isn't air tight. There's always going to be a small leak over time. Depending on driving conditions (assuming lots of stop and go or your racing) coolant will "leak" out. It's normal. Be glad your BMW tells you that you are low and all you have to do is buy the 50/50 solution and put a little bit in next time yourself.

They have a 50/50 solution that is ready to fill? I swear you needed to mix yourself with some distilled water.

I picked that up at local grocery store. Just make sure mineral content and fluoride are 0%.

They don't sell a 50/50 premixed as far as I know. They had a big jug that was already mixed in the back that they would have been using when servicing a vehicle, so they just poured some of it into an empty smaller jug of coolant and gave it to me.

If you just need a small amount, you can just add the water as well..might change the mix from 50/50 to 49.5/50.5 so not a huge deal.

Same thing happened on me too, I bought my car on last Sep and got yellow coolant warning this Sep. My mechanic says it's normal, sometimes 328 do burns coolant, especially under Continued intense driving

I have a 335is and I got the low coolant the next day after the track which was shortly after break in period.

Haven't had an issue since they topped it off.

I'm at 50k KMs now too

Thanks for the feed back guys. I'll be able to sleep better now. Its just strange that my previous BMWs never consumed coolant.
