Manual steering wheel on automatic car possible?
hey guys i was wondering if a manual steering wheel will fit in a automatic car?
i understand that the paddles will be gone which is ok because i dont use it. Will this work perfectly fine or will the car give me a code because it doesnt have paddles connected? I cant seem to find a straight answer :s Edit: So i pulled the trigger and bought the manual wheel for my automatic car hoping it would work. Turned out everything worked fine i dont have the paddles anymore but im ok with that cause i didnt really like them anywase the sports mode works fine still nothings wrong and overall im very happy! heres a picture of the wheel on ( sorry not an artist at taking pictures and sorry for dark lighting.) steering wheels should be somewhat universal for the e90-e93 range. |

My car, an a/t, has a steering wheel with no paddles, and I'd like to put one with paddles on, if it's possible.

There will be a fault code stored, but no warning lights on the dash. |

I red your post about this and got scared bout what u just said. Ive red about other people doing it with success and no problems but still not too sure. For your experience the DS stopped working? and this was caused by the wheel? |

It will work in the early cars, but at some point BMW changed the paddle wiring, thought it was 2010 or 2011, but could have been 2009 with the rest of the LCI changes and things worked a bit different - in 2007 and 2008 for sure, the wiring is 3 wires to each paddle, one wire is up, one wire is down and one wire is ground. When you choose up, it connects the up wire to ground, down, the down wire to grown. If you don't touch the levers, the are just 2 normally open circuits, so unplugging them will look the same as plugged into the car and should have no effect whatsoever. The later wiring setup used a resistance type setup so the car can tell when they are plugged in I assume.
2007 and 8 wiring Diagrams of paddle connector wire functions: Left Paddle Connector ______ 3-------|<--downshift (press) 2-------|<--ground 1-------|<--upshift (squeeze) ==<-tab Right Paddle Connector ==<-tab 1-------|<--downshift (press) 2-------|<--ground 3-------|<--upshift (squeeze) Rob

Before they had M3 wheels with paddle cutouts, I ran a manual trans m3 wheel on my 2008 no issues, then got brave and cut it for paddles.

Yup, you should be all set, just put it on and don't plug in the paddles!
