Question Road Trip Advice (CO TO UT)

I am going to take a trip from Vail CO to Moab Utah to see Arches and Canyon land National Parks. I think heading there I will take standard highways that Google maps use. However, on the return trip I want to try some back roads.

What do you think of this route? What would you recommend?

Anyone have experience with road 330 in CO or 128 in UT?

Scenic Byway 128 in UT is very nice, definitely recommend taking that instead of 191 from 70 to Moab.

That was the route I had wanted to take, but I got finished at Arches earlier than planned and figured I'd cancel my hotel room for that night and high-tail it back to Denver via I-70.

The road from Moab to I-70 was very interesting and scenic. Also, rather than going west back to I-70 on that outer-road thing, go east. There were some interesting looking abandoned buildings and such.

128 is great, you follow the Colorado River going east/northeast out of Moab (though the river is flowing the other way of course), and the scenery is 100x better. The Fisher Towers are a very cool to see. 191, though about 20 minutes faster is very boring 'til about the Moab airport.

I've never been on 330, but if it's anything like the western part of 50, it should be interesting.

IMO Moab is still a little warm this time of year, I'll be going in late Oct when things cool off there.

Usually peak color starts mid to late Sept at higher elevations.

I would like to go in October but I want to take my 135i out and cannot risk running into snow (summer tires). I have a 2005 Subaru outback for the winter with snow tires. It's the non-turbo unfortunately and is extremely slow.
