At close to 16000 miles my cars still shows 2500 more miles to go for service. I called SA to check, I got an answer that I am due for oil service at 15000. So I get oil service now and take it back for first full service after 2500 (or whenever my cars tells) ? Can somebody explain how this works ? Thanks

go get your free oil change. They'll explain the rest when you're sipping your free coffee.

Take the car in for oil change. You are entitled to a change at 15k or every year, which-ever comes first. I git my first oil change at 12500(one year after purchase) and again at 15000. In this case more IS better. I do hope that you have changed your oil yourself at least once. Even though BMW recommends their service interval(1 year or 15000), it really should be changed more often. CHEAP INSURANCE!

No I did not change. May be I was blindly following BMW manual. So I will be taking it back after 2500 more miles.

if you do, you'll be paying for that oil change. Nothing wrong with 15k oil changes provided that service schedule matches how hard the car is driven. Drive it harder, change it more frequently.

Your car has an internal meter that will go off at certain intervals (usually about 15,000) based on the amount of fuel you have used. Contrary to popular believe, the car does not monitor anything about oil quality, but simply detemines how much gas you have burned.

You are entitled to a free oil change whenever the car says you need it, or at annual intervals.

In your case, they should have reset the indicator in your car at 15,000 miles so it wouldn't register again at 17,500.

it does much more than calculate the fuel you've burned, and indeed has an oil quality sensor, according to what I've read.

In the past, it was not based on mileage at all (as far as annual oil change), but rather time. I had an annual oil change twice (both times not when the computer told me too) and made sure they did not reset the interval. Last year I had 2 oil changes 6 weeks apart. I am not complaining, I didn't pay for them.

For only $60 bucks, change it every three months. This will keep your engine clean all the time thus prolonging it's life.

I believe that you are incorrect. I've had multiple SAs confirm that sensor works purely by calculating fuel burned. From what I can tell, the "oil quality sensor" stuff exists nowhere in BMW literature and is an urban myth perpetuated purely on chat boards.

However, if you have a link to the contrary, I'd be glad to be proven wrong.

The parts (new filter, gaskets, 7 quarts of oil) cost $60 when you order them from getbmwparts.com. I think this is what he means. You'd still have to change the oil yourself.

If you buy the oil and filter, you can just take it to a local shop and they probably won't charge you much.

Yeah. The oil change set is roughly $60 shipped from tischer (getbmwparts.com). Just do the oil change yourself. Pretty easy and you can do it in less than 30 mins. Go to DIY section and search for oil change.

location of oil filter makes this SUPER EASY... lift the car, drain out old engine oil, pour new engine oil, open the oil filter housing, replace oil filter, cloase the oil filter housing... can't be any easier than that...

“oil condition” is a vague term. To determine the quality of the oil in any depth would require a laboratory to be attached to the car. That the system can detect gross contamination is another thing.

As evidenced by those of us who do our own in-between oil changes and see no change in the service countdown, fuel usage is the defining parameter. Except, perhaps, in cases of extreme contamination.
