Nightmare track rod end removal
Just thought I'd share this as it was a bastard experience. If anyone has/had/is having trouble removing your track rod ends, this is what I had to do to mine. I used a thin cutting wheel on my angle grinder the slice down the length of the joint, the did the same on the exact opposite. Then used a masonry chizzle to stretch open the the part where the pinch bolt goes. This then splits the 2 cuts apart from the thread which makes you job so much easier. Also used a good quality mole grips to hold onto the steering rod, then a big long 21mm spanner on the track rod ends. Another thing that helped was the use of a small scissor Jack to support the steering arms |

I'm about to do this job too, but I'll be replacing the track rods and boots too, so hopefully won't have to split the ends off. At least that's what I hope!

Never understood why BMW couldn't have the same track rod arrangement as every other manufacturer. I've coated the lock nuts on mine with copper grease then wrapped the whole thing in cling film to keep out the wet.

Cling film?!
If you were going to those extremes, you could have used self almalgamating tape |

Good luck, make sure you have a good quality tx40 bit to lockout the joint, I snapped a couple before buying a good one

I'm planning to pop out the ball joint, then slide back the rubber boot to get at the large nut on the steering rack, hopefully bypassing the separation of the track rods, is that a feasible method do you think?
Mind you since I'm not reusing the parts I could just angle grind through the rod anyway, be a lot quicker! |

I've found a 23.5" (60cm) wrench from toolstation which I hope I could use, but then I doubt I could lift the car that high!
They also have a heavy duty one for a tenner which is 17.5 inches (45cm) which might be a better compromise.
