Google Maps Send to Car is Broken Again
Just tried to send a map to my car and got an error message email from BMW. Called BMW Assist and they explained they have been told something is broken on the Google Maps side of things, so it is down for now.
Just thought I would post in case others are having this problem. |

Yes. Nice feature when it works properly.
When looking at a Google Map location, just click send to car and select BMW and the email address used with your BMW Assist account and away it goes. Shows up as a new message in your iDrive screen. |

Wow. That is actually very damn cool. That would make me want to consider iDrive in my next car, heh.
[edit] what else can you do with this "email"? Can you send any other kinds of info to your car? Text notes of any kind, etc?

Just tried again and got the same error message. Maybe a regional issue.

Sort of... when you send the map there is a Google field for notes. You can just send any map info with whatever you want as a note and the note can be read from the car. See my screen cap.

The notes section of it never worked for me. How did you get it work? I have been using it since a little over 3 months now. Notes never ever worked! I have a 2011 335D with Idrive.

Notes feature check
Hmm, I think you should check back with your SA, b/c the notes feature should work. I have a 2010 x5 and I've been using the google send to car option since day one, which was around Dec. '09. There are intermittent times when I didn't receive the link, just as the OP said, google was temporarily down. I believe there is a limited number of characters that can be sent in the notes feature, but I don't the exact number. I'll try to send another link to the car tonight and will reply back tomorrow if the feature is up and running again. Also, I believe there may a time limit as to when you send a link to the car. For example, if just got home and shut off the car, you may have up to 2 hours (roughly speaking) to send a link to the car. Hope this helps.

Update on this.
Google Maps send to car is now working for me, but I still get the e-mail error message. Called Assist again and they say this is a recent issue with owners who had a previous Assist account (I traded a 2007 335i for this 2011) and they are working on it. |

I got this feature too, and it has been working well since I got my e93 delivered in Sept '09. I live in northern NJ and never had any issues with this feature. I recently drove to Vero Beach FL, and while my wife was driving, I went to googleMaps on my iPad's at&t's wireless wi-fi and was able to send addresses of different establishments and attractions in Melbourne, St. Lucie, St. Cloud, Ft Pierce, Sebastian, etc.... to my e93 through myInfo on the screen while driving at 90+mph with the top open. I never had any issues or glitches with this feature, even though I hated the loud harsh rumble that the run flats made on the sandy asphalt of FL's interstates. And the GPS system was always sending me through alternate routes, which was downright retarded. Avoid changing the eMail addresses, it seems to lock unto it once you give to the BMW Assist.

Yes, and you must have a BMW equipped with the service, meaning LCI in the states, a little bit earlier, like 08 overseas. Can anyone confirm that this is working now? I haven't been able to send one successfully all week. Last edited by Professor///M; 09-12-2010 at 04:12 PM.. |

I just read the last posting. I am from Boonton NJ, and it is now 18:35 hours summer EST. I went to Google Maps, I log in using my Google accounts. I typed Marriott in Fullerton CA, which I am flying next Friday. Click send box. An applet appears, I choose CARS, then BMW, in the box that appears BMW Assist, under account I type the eMail which I had given to the BMW Assist when I started my services. I click send. Within three minutes, after taking a pee, I run to my garage, the garage door is still closed but I can get the GPS signal. I start my navigation, wait till it boots up. Then wait till my location is shown on the screen. Go to BMW Assist, click on Messages, and under myInfo I see the Google map directions for Fullerton Marriott CA. So as far as I am concerned this feature was never down. Not since Sept 2009, nor when I went to Vero Beach last week, nor today. Make sure you got the BMW Assist registered, it is free for first four years. Make sure the GPS recognizes you. Press the SOS button, wait for voice connection and talk to whomever answers you, ask them if you are on the system, you got to have a password registered, if not you got to call them on a land line. Make sure the eMail that you have registered is the exactly same one that you use on the Google Maps. I do log in when I use Google Maps, for I have a Google gMail address. But the eMail address registered at BMW Assist is a POP3 mail box from my company's Verizon T1 account, with its dedicated incoming/outcoming servers. Don't know if this got have anything to do?

I too was driving an 07 and am now in a 2011 and I guess that's why both of ours isn't working. |

Just searched Disneyland in Anaheim CA, send to my e93 along with a note. Run to my garage, clicked BMW Assist and my Disneyland map along with the note was there under myInfo. Sorry, don't wanna to rub anyone's nose, but I have been doing this using my iPad while riding in the car, top down, cruising at 90+mph!!!....and all works superbly.

I sent an address to my car using google maps on Friday night and when I got in the car Saturday morning it wasn't there, even though the message on google had said it was successfully sent. This has happend once or twice before though. In any case I just called up the concierge service once I got in the car and had them send the address to my car.

do you have to be a registered google map user? in addition to have activated an account with BMW Assist? Let me try without signing in at google maps.
