The Nurburgring fever started ....

Took delivery of my Z4M Roadster last Thursday and set out immediately to put on a set of H&R Sport springs and OEM CSLs.

The original plan was to take my E92 335d to my first Ring trip in 2007 but with the arrival of the screaming new toy, the E92 was relegated to the workshop for more work on it's sound system. So early Friday morning, I set out for the Eifel mountains with great anticipation. I don't know the ZM Roadster at all, and I'm going to find out how she drives ....... on the Nurburgring ........ crazy! (TBH, I was grinning all the way there. What a little pocket rocket it is. Damn this thing is fast!)

Upon arrival, the ZM stirred up some attention with it's bright Interlagos paintwork and those menacing CSLs.

It was drizzling lightly so I decided to take car back to her original homage, the BMW M Test Center at Nurburg. Here's the HQ when all M cars are street tested on the Nordschleife.

Back at the Ring and the crowd assembled.

Very soon, my little pocket rocket became more of a toy among the field of highly strung metals ....

The clouds parted and it's Ring time!

15 hard laps and the Z4M passed with flying colours. It took all I gave it(including a short trip across the grassy pitch after I lauched it sideways up a kerb).

The ZM Roadster is a great drivers' car, much better than my old M3. I know the 3.0i is superb after being a passenger in a few, but with the S54 powering the chassis, it is truely sublime! It's literally a short wheelbase E46 M3 that is 200kgs lighter. The steering is fantastically accurate, the nose of the car just goes wherever you want it to go and the rear follows. In the event of more steering required, just dab the throttle slightly at mid corner and the tail kicks out to point the car at exactly where you want it to go next.

At the end of the weekend, the Roadster remained in one piece with the engine pulling much harder now it has adapted itself to some aggressive driving. Here's a pic before we left, plastered with Nurburgring dirt. It's unlikely the car will be clean for any asthetic photoshoots, because it's a waste not to be driven hard, again and again and again ......

.... we are going back in 3 weeks, and then in August, and then in September ..... the Brembos will be on in time for our next trip. Thanks to JLevi for his usual speedy service.

Awesome weekend! I'm still buzzing.

Great pictures Nick.

The R8 does look good in the flesh, I saw a couple at Le Mans.

It's pretty much the norm.

There were Mondeo diesels being trashed out there and a bloke brought along his London black cab, which he topped out at 65MPH. I wouldn't worry about what car to bring along. The Ring is not about who has the faster car, it's all about being there and driving on it.

Absolutely stunning pictures. Great work.

I think the Audi looks pants though. Maybe its better in real life.

Is that the German bird that raced the Top Gear Transit around the ring?

No. The one in the pic is from Zakspeed Viper.

Sabine Schmitz is the darling of the Nurburgring, she's the one on Top Gear and drives the Ring Taxi on Sundays.
