Hissing noise from centre of dash, 320d

Noticed recently, when I drive without music on, I can hear a strong hissing noise which seems to come from around the centre of the dash, and no it isn't the air-con! It increases as I speed up, I think it only happens when the engine is on and the car is moving. Hissing is the best way to describe it but I suppose it could be some other mechanical-related sound. Anybody else experienced this? Normal?

EDIT: It also happens when the car is out of gear and the engine revved.

I appreciate this is an old thread, however i've just sold me E87 and bought an 07 E92 (177 engine) and it has exactly the same hissing sound (when warm) as this chap describes, any ideas on what it could be?

I've had BMW listen and the technician said he couldnt hear it and the engine sounded normal? I have my doubts!

I also went to the expense of replacing the aux belt and tensioner as I was informed it sounded like that (by another garage) but guess what.....the same noise exists!!!! Grrrr!

Please please please help, its really spoiling my enjoyment of this car to the point where I want rid.

The noise I was hearing was diagnosed as a rubbing together of gears (or gear-related components). They said that to fix it was "an engine out job", but it was nothing harmful so it was up to me whether I wanted to pay a huge amount to fix it. I no longer have the car.

Cam-chain / tensioner? Common fault on miley 320d and it is an engine-out job to fix.

I've recently started to hear a similar noise on my 335D here and there..

I'm not sure how else to describe it but it sounds the same as when you shake a blown light bulb and the element inside rattles.. You get a very gentle weird hissing noise like when two thin bits of metal are twangngin together..

It's a weird sound from a car and it doesn't vary with speed..

If I take her to BMW, I can guarantee the noise will not be noticeable...

What sort of mileage is it on?

UH OH....

Problems really have got worse now. As I was driving today the engine has gone BANG and there is a big hole in the side of the block. for a 2007 model with 51k on the clock, this is hardly the long service life of an engine i'd expect from any car let alone a BMW.

Needless to say Im a very unhappy person at the moment, especially since this comes just after yesterday when I received a reply to my letter to BMW customer services pleading for help, only to be told "take it to a dealer". That infuriated me even more as i'd already explained in my letter that the main BMW dealer couldnt find a fault!

Now that the car is basically scrap, im thinking of having it trailered to BMW sytner in sheffield and parking outside with spray writing on the side - "DO NOT BUY BMW"!!!

Jesus that's a nightmare, I take it there is no extended warranty on it? Did you get it serviced at BMW? I would be on the phone to BMW UK first thing Mon morning and see what they suggest before taking any drastic action, be polite but firm and let it be known you will not be fobbed off.
