Press Prep Cars
Just been looking at the Auc website and came across this E61 M5 which looks good but then noticed "Press Preperation" on the optional extras list, so I did so reseach a found out that it was the same car that Clarkson drove(thrashed) against the Merc E63 AMG at Manchester airport, would you buy this or any press cars?

If I bought it, it would always be there in the back of my (paranoid) mind... What's that bump/ thud etc
Probability is; in its early life it was probably given extra servicing to help with the exubararant driving style it was witnessed to. I think if you bought it, you wouldn't witness any major issues. But it would play on your mind and due to that I might have to steer clear |

I did think RK registered cars were press cars, but that YC is too!!
Wouldn't put me off owning a press car at all. Looked after to the highest degree. My old man a has an M5 tourer... One word describes that car...... EPIC

I'd thought if anything was going to drop off/break on a press car registered in 2007 would have done so by now. It either did and has been put right or is simply bullet proof. Whilst it might put a buyer off, if you really think about it, at this age, it shouldn't IMO.

Would I buy a car that I knew had been thrashed round a track etc etc in its early life?
No. And I'll bet they get no more servicing etc than any other car. Just lots of tyres and brake pad replacements! |

I agree, but having a young press car "enthusiast" hammer the car from cold perhaps - which car would you rather have?
Oh I dunno........you can look it it both ways. |

Not sure I would consider one.
With the amount of time spent handed out around all the magazines and TV shows they have done a lot of miles getting ragged to the limit and beyond. They don't own the car and probably don't care. I'm sure a few intentionally go over the top and try to break some cars to make a story. |

I don't see the problem in buying an ex press M5, the M5 could withstand a lot more than the likes of Clarkson could throw at it. If this M5's past wasn't known, what would make it any different from any other used M5??

Think about how people treat hire cars. Most are thrashed to within an inch of their lives as the car is not theirs so people just don't care. Now imagine that abuse x 10 and you might get to how journo's treat them. Probably revved from cold, spending a lot of time in the upper rev ranges, thrown round tracks at full attack speed putting extra wear on the suspension components.
Basically it's lived a lot harder life then I'd like, especially on a car which already has some expensive bits on it with the potential to throw up some big bills. For people saying an M5 is designed to take it, really? An M5 touring is just a big estate with more power than usual, it's not a track car. Personally I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. |

Actually mate generally speaking an M division person will be present at track tests, also briefs journalists also before lending to drive on the continent. The journo's are not hooligans and have mechanical sympathy. They are not complete cunts who will thrash a car from cold for no reason. They are respectful car enthusiasts, they will hammer the car like WE hammer cars. They don't sit there bouncing it off the limiter like a 17 year old.
They do doughnuts and they drive fast, that's what they are meant to do. They wouldn't needlessly redline a car from cold. Your local dealer however DID do that to YOUR car whilst it's in for service and YOUR car didn't get the special treatment that a press car got.. EDIT: YOUR car meaning joe publics car,not just yours Guv

The tourer is built as well as the saloon. The M5 has been used as a 'Ring taxi
Successfully for years. They had take hard driving alot more than a regular BMW. It's built to take 8.5k all day long.
