What lug wrench to get?

Planning on getting some new rims soon but I need a lug wrench that won't scratch the inner lug pockets. Last time I brought in my car to get my tires mounted they scratched the hell out of my rims

I use a 17mm impact socket on a 3" extension bar attached to a breaker bar for removal. For tightening I use the same setup except I finger tighten the bolts first and then replace the breaker bar with a torque wrench calibrated to 87 ft/lb. Either on or off I have to put the impact socket onto my lug key.

/this

1/2" breaker bar makes it so much easier for removal.

They make sockets specifically for wheels that have plastic outer liners.
These have a bad review but this is what they look like.

Just look for a better brand.

The BMW jack kit comes with a wrench that is set to the correct torque setting. It works great:

Holy smokes, you are my evil twin. I do exactly the same thing, except I don't have wheel locks.

Breaker bar, 17mm socket, extension, torque wrench (1/2" drive for me) is all you need. And that lo-pro jack from Harbor Freight....

+1 for breaker bar to easily remove lugs and torque wrench to reinstall, and you'll need a long socket or an extension to make the reach safely. I just wrapped the socket with some masking tape to avoid damage, though I'd be more worried about damaging the rim by hitting it while inserting the threaded lugs than anything else, personally.

You don't want to use too long of an extension bar with the torque wrench. Otherwise you get a torsion effect and don't get full torque. That's the primary reason I only use the 3" extension.

Hey,

Silly question. I just purchased this kit, and am trying to figure out how to best use the torque wrench. Because the torque wrench head is flat, I can not access the wheel bolts, which are somewhat recessed in my wheels. Did you have to purchase an adapter for the torque wrench? I have style 189 wheels. Thanks in advance!

I bought a set from ECS they are very effective at protecting the rims. Just used them last weekend. I keep them in my car and will require any shop taking my wheels off to use it.

They also have sockets with built in torque ability.

You need a short extension bar, ideally 3" long, between the lug socket and the torque wrench. You also need a 17mm socket on the end of the extension. This setup will allow you clearance of the tyre/tire.

Wrapping electrical tape around your thin wall 17mm socket works like kq328xi said, but i think blue masking tape works better since it slides a bit better than the electrical tape.
