Custom Internals
I am just curious as to if anyone has ever thought of doing this for our cars? Rebuilding with forged rods and better pistons and aggressive cams.
Don't tell me that its way to expensive and that I should just buy a new car. Its just food for thought and I think it would be fun to put in some higher compression pistons and forged rods. Then get some cams with a ported head. So just wondering if anyone has ever thought hey that would be cool or started looking into it themselves? |

I was seriously hoping Schrick would have come out with cams for our engines by now but it doesn't look like that will ever happen. I suppose comp cams could be called to do a custom grind cam. They do custom grind's for a lot of different applications all the time. Just gotta spend some time on the phone with them.

I'm already considering a heart transplant if I can get the bike paid off and find an engine laying around that no body wants. I have no intention of getting rid of my car anytime soon so I'm toying around with a few different ideas, none of which involve this level of dedication to a subpar performing engine. The M54 makes it look like a 3 cylinder diesel imo.

It would just be something unique. I know that after the cost it would not be as powerful as an N54 swap. But if I was going for just power and raw performance I would go back to my evo. Or I would buy a mustang and put an aluminator in it and throw on a kenne bell or whipple on it.
I know cams and pistons bring out a whole new side of an engine when they are optimized for it and I actually wouldn't mind trying it out. I don't plan on getting rid of the car. So as a rebuild I might actually try this. |

Andrew,
That's like asking the guy who did an LS1 swap on his 996 Porsche 911 why he went through hell to get the engine to work in there instead of building up the flat 6. If you want to really go through the headache and suffering to get to a one off end result that you are happy with, then go for it. Some might call you an idiot or ridiculous for doing it but at least you know in the end that you will have something no one else has.

It is crazy and I know I wont be the fastest or most powerful kid on the block. But it would be unique to me and I think it would be a challenging headache that would be quite rewarding if I got it to work out. |

Do you really believe thats all that the N52 is capable of? I have seen NA 4G63's make 240 and 250 AWHP. That engine is also terrible for an NA application. But put the boost to it and it runs like a champ.

maybe do an e46m3 engine swap instead? you can still have custom internals.
there is 4 parts, kinda cool |

I think the appeal of cams for N52's would be a screaming red line...

So I called cosworth and they said they would be more than willing to put together a custom setup but it would require it to be a few sets it couldn't be for just one car. But they could do the whole nine yards. Pistons, rods, cams, springs, retainers, valves and everything.
I haven't heard from Kelford and I dont have international calling to speak with them over the phone lol. |

If you can get a group buy price going I think there would be a good amount of people here willing to chip in for a cam. Get the individual price's from cosworth and post it up in here if you can. I know I'd be down for a custom grind cam as long as AA could match their software to handle it.

That was my next concern would be the tune. I hope that AA could adjust the software to match it.
Also called Wiseco and they quoted me 155 per piston. What compression would everyone want to run and cam specs too? That way I can shoot that cosworth rep I have been speaking with over the info. Last edited by berserkerx; 03-31-2011 at 09:36 PM.. |

So is there a list of people who are interested in this? Cosworth is the one that needs a group buy thing. But they do everything from pistons rods cams and the whole nine yards. With the other companies we would need to piece it together through the other companies.
I personally was wanting to go to a 12:1 or a 12.5: compression. I havent worked out cam specs. I hope that someone is at least a little bit as enthused to do this as I am lol. |

First off our heads are already ported and have no room for improvement there.
Second tuning of this sort requires more than "a little adjustment" This is an entirely new program when you take into account vanos, vvt with fact your change compression ratio etc. Also for all that work you are better increasing the displacement while you are at it. If you replace all that stuff all you would need is a new crank-a couple companies do this as well as has the appropriate software. The 3.2 upgrade puts out 300 hp and with all new parts could likely get 330 hp NA but would be pricey. |
