Is it possible to put an intake system in that is less restrictive than the factory unit but just as quiet? I'm exploring the option of dual intakes but I'm enjoying the quietness of the car since I just came from a tuned STi.

try the BMW performance intake. If you want to beef u the intake and be quiet, that is what you probably want. It doesn't change the sound.

What is it you're really after? If it's more power, the dual cone by itself is rather lame in this respect. Try a "tune" of the JB variety and you'll have you cake and enjoy the taste too: decent power increase and nice music without the intruding noise except at WOT.

The JB3 is just around the corner. I would like to make the engine breath better after I add the JB3 but I want to learn a little more about the intake system. I'm after power but I would sacrifice a few ponies for some quiet.

The sound you are going to hear with a DCI is going to be nill compared to what you probabely had with the tuned Subi.But if thats the route you want to go,i agree with Chaz58.The BMW performance intake will be quiet as stock.

I have the BMS DCI - there's hardly any noticeable difference in noise over stock.

There is definetely a difference in sound over the stock box to an open element intake.You can hear the turbo,s spooling and a very slight stock DV sound.I also felt better throttle response besides the difference in sound,and an increase (slightely) in high rpm power.(high rpm pulling power)

I was talking about sound - thought that was what the OP was about. There's very little change in sound under normal driving. WOT I can hear the turbos spool a little more if I'm driving next to something that reflects the sound. Performance is measurable in winter. My best 1/4 went from 114mph to 117.

Sound is what I was looking for, I'd like it as close to stock as possible during normal cruising. WOT is a different story and I'm not as picky about sound during that time.

Well of course sound perception is an individual thing that's difficult to describe, but I don't think the DCI sounds that much different from stock. The golf t mod makes the car far louder than the DCI.

+1 There will only be a slight sucking sound. Nothing like on evos or stis

weird, i can hear the suckin sound on mine pretty obvious. i dont think it's "loud" but i like the suckin/wooshin noise..lol

+1 Although I do have the dual cones I highly doubt that the stocker is restrictive at all at these power levels. I would really be hard pressed not to say that any given intake may even be affecting the power in a negative manner considering the amount of heat in the general area of the intakes. Until there is a good cai option or the power levels require more air the stocker should do just fine.

Even on my modded Evo,s though i had open element intakes,they were more for just a slight increase in power because of my mods,and for the looks.But most of the tuners agreed while the stock intake was a slight restriction they were still good for up to and around 375-400HP before you would really get a major increase in performance.I believe this to be true with our cars also.

Get yourself a quality drop-in filter to put in the stock box. That should help your car breath better without affecting the sound.

To me that sounds like the best option. Which brands make quality stock filters? Does Mobil 1 make air filters? What about Purolator?

I have a helene streamline filter in my oem intake and the car feels stronger this way then when I had my vishnu dci. Thats also with the tune. I will be selling mine. I think it does more harm then good in my case. I did like the sound though.
