Opinion please

Morning all,

Considering an AUC X5 for last few days and while looking at the technical side of these I found out, that in diesel there are or were 3 different varients.

X5 3.0ltr diesel X drive

I think the X drive means 4x4 or is it something else ?

1. 30D X drive
2. 35D X drive
3. 40D X drive

I believe the 35D is no more in production but looking at the power figure i.e bhp, torque and the £££ they are going for at the moment its a no brainer to go for 30D as 40D is out of budget.

So the question is why BMW stopped the production of 35D ? were there any issues with that or something ? or are there any known faults or issues with this engine ?

Lastly if there are no issues with the 35D then what are must have in these X5s.

I was going to ring couple of dealers with regards to my enquiry but thought to get an opinion from the honest members of this forum first.

Thanks for you time and help.

The 4.0d replaced the 3.5d that's all; nothing wrong with the earlier version they just tweaked & rebadged. Not sure of the differences though.

Extra are the same ones you'd want in any other Beemer I think; sat Nav, heated seats, sun protection, upgraded stereo, usb, parking sensors (maybe cameras). Not sure what's standard on the X5 (might be different also on brand new cars). Others with more knowledge will be along soon...

Oh, panoramic roof is brilliant if you can get it (an expensive option often overlooked).

I have a 35d X5 and its great. As Roger says they are all the same 3.0d engine in various states of tune, the 40d was introduced last year to replace the 35d but only adds about 10bhp. However, more significantly at that stage the 8 speed auto box was intoduced which I have not tried but is reported to be great. Having said that my car is a 2008 model and the 6 speed box is just fine.

Try a 3.0d before you commit too heavily to it, they are a bit underpowered as they are around 230bhp compared to almost 290 for the 35d which are often not much dearer but harder to find.

Spec pretty much as Roger says, M Sport looks the nicest, 20" wheels essential, nav fitted to most and may now be standard. After that its heated seats, USB, pano roof very nice, electric opening boot is very useful if you can get it.

They are a bit thirsty so be prepared for largish fuel bills if you do a lot of miles.

Thanks Roger, I believe most of the X5 I am looking at have media package, business audio, heated seats and xenon headlight.

I'm sure Roger would bolt two deck chairs in the boot of the X3 if you ask him nicely.

Consider it done .

xdrive is 4x4, just like the non xdrive cars, but see it as pre/post ED, the xdrive when it was introduced was kind of a more efficient version of the non-xdrive cars. The name has just stuck (plus come inline with overseas 4x4 BMWs).

Think that's about it unless I'm missing something - just 4x4.

Thats it Rog and also at the same time they put the new 3.0ltr diesel in the X5 which is 245bhp. If you see any 3.0ltr diesel X5's without xdrive they have the old 4x4 system and the old 3.0ltr engine.

Xdrive X5 were introduced late 2009 , really wasn't a massive change so if you get an earlier car for a decent price I wouldn't ignore it because it isn't badged Xdrive. Also pre Xdrive the 35d models were badged 3.0sd but its the same engine as the later 35d.

All very confusing .....

Wonder why it took the X5 so long to catch-up . My X3 is an xdrive model and is 56 plate (when it was first introduced), they also had the name 3.0sd at that point. Odd that it would take the X5 3 years to introduce the 'family' name.
