I thought the same thing when I saw this but I assumed this was the Neue Klasse sedan (i3 or whatever they call it), when apparently it's the SAV (iX3). And then the height and front end bulk made more sense. (I'm curious how many other commenters made the same mistake I did, though it's entirely possible I'm just dumb.)

The front end of the sedan concept still does look better to me, but there's at least a lot more familial connection with the current models (lower/middle bumper fascia), tying together with the original New Class from 1970 (lights and grill).

Just remember when BMW enthusiasts ran Chris Bangle out for the Bangle butt…it’s was Adrian VanHooyDonk that designed the E65 and E60.

Yes, the same guy who is now the head of BMW Design.

Bangle designed the E46 and E39…just some history.

To me all EV's are ugly and environment nightmares but they don't have to be physically ugly. Fisker figured out how to make an attractive hybrid car and they near bankrupt. Even the Chinese EV have good styling cues but BMW insets in using the ugly stick to beat there designs with. Before long they won't even be able to sell me a ICE car. 2020 M4CS in garage looks better every day.

The i4/i5 do not have a practical real-world range IMHO.
For commercial success, the vehicle style needs to evoke some emotional response and that style may not always meet a certain CD target.

Enter GM EV1: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Motors_EV1

Even if the vehicle were to offer market leading CD and range, there is a community of buyers who would never own it. Present company included.

I drove i4 M50 and liked it. Really liked it. This vehicle in Neue Klasse reincarnation will be even better with solid state batteries (assuming Neue Klasse style will honor the idea of a driver friendly cockpit)

All current EVs are transitional vehicles. Best to wait for solid state batteries and drive M vehicle in the interim.

We used to fall in love in E46s and E92s when were seeing them on the cover of car&driver, remember?

The i5 range is more than enough for me and my driving habits since I can charge at home. Not everyone needs maximum range for long road trips. I drive less than 250 miles/week, and longer trips will be in the Cayenne.

That said, it would be great to have more range. But I’m willing to sacrifice some if my car doesn’t look ridiculous.

G22 not my cup of tea but much better than whatever this is.
Well whatever their doing they are going to have to work very hard on besting the lines, angles and proportion’s of the F series M cars. They are failing miserably as far as I’m concerned. With the exception of the M8 of course. I buy cars on many different aspects. But the first is always is it pleasing to my eyes. Then I go from there.

So they've gone from MASSIVE front grills on the G80 to the super small ones seen here. It's clear that a few folks on the BMW design team are straddling the fence & can't get their minds straight. We're consistently seeing the brand's design language land all over the map in many aspects.

Well, the G80 uses those for cooling.
The neue klasse is electric, so not necessary to have massive air intakes.

And btw BMW head of design has made it abundantly clear they want each model to look different. Hence the current lineup of vastly varied designs. It’s actually an impressive departure relative to the last 20 years of automotive sausage making.

I like the front graphic except the tooth gap. Again BMW, the tooth gap at the bottom is not nice.

Mind the Tooth Gap, BMW!

Those cringe instagram responses "love this", ehghhh.

This concepts cars are just getting crazier and crazier, like the top part of it, the lower part thats split looks a but unfinished in some way can't put my head around it. If i were to do it i would probably do it without the front being splited apart its just weird.
