Talking Back with a BMW - Well very nearly

Hi everyone,

Its been a while since I posted / visited here, as I sold my E90 330d M-Sport last year, for something different / family friendly.

In short, I have missed my BMW cars and am now looking to get hold of another one ASP.

What I have in mind is a 2007 E92, 335d WITH Idrive, Paddles etc etc.

Mileage wise I am looking at something with around 80-90k on the clock (Budget restrictions).

I'm hoping to go and look at one tomorrow that I have my eye on.

Any current E92 owners out there I could really do with a quick heads up on what to check / look for on such a car?

Having not owned a 335d - e92 before, but I have owned BMW's, anything specific to look out for on one would help greatly.

Thanks a lot, and its great to be posting again here ......... just need to secure a car now too, its been too long

Usual stuff really, but my list would include listening for grumbling topmounts (a rumbling/booming noise over bumps at low ish speed) if you have an ODB reader, take that with you and see what fault codes are stored (might be a bit late for that now if you don't.)

Other than that, look for the gearbox shifting smoothly, all buttons and switches working properly and evidence of a decent service history. Basic usual car buying stuff really.
Check the DPF in the menus and see what life is left in it, at that sort of mileage, it's likely to be either on it's way out or already borked.

Good luck with it.

Check the red boost hose for signs of leaks. As mentioned by Iforb, an OBD reader would be useful to check for any fault codes.

The most common faults I keep seeing come up on the 335d are:
> red boost pipe leaking oil
> EGR & Main Thermostats failing
> oil separator/crank case breather getting clogged

I think they will all happen eventually so if they've already been done on the car you're going to look at that would be ideal

You will probably hear the odd scaremongering about the turbochargers failing but having been on this forum for a while now, I have yet to see a post about that...

Cheers all,

Having had a 330d it seems pretty similar for things to look out for - so that's good news.

I went to look at one the other day, and I'm not sure what it was but something just didn't feel right about it - a feeling more than anything, so I walked away.

I may have to wait a little while longer actually, as looking at whats on the market I would be better increasing my budget by a few k, and move into lower mileage and a full BMW service history - which would be worth the money in the long run.
