Anyone just cut maybe a half turn off of spring coil?
I've got a 2006 e90 330i with the sport suspension, 18 inch wheels and I know it's about .6 inches lower that the regular suspension or so I've read. Only want about 3/4 or so lower so was wondering if I could get away with just cutting off part of a coil turn and not ruin the ride or handling to any extent. I drive over a hundred miles 5 days a week and dodge deer, coons, porcupines, pigs, rodents, OK you get the picture.........RDT

cutting the spring will change the spring rate. Although if you only cut half the coil, it probably won't change much. You can do this, and in theory it should work, but you might want to hit google, and read up about it before you attempt to diy.
I think you'd be better off looking into some of those lowering perches, which will lower the car slightly without changing the spring. |

Hey thanks mike-y & tee212, that's why I asked. As for the massbimmer why waste the time with your remark. Oh wait i see, your a major general jackass, couldn't help it no doubt. I'll check into lowering perches......RDT
Hey I also was gonna say bite-me massbimmer but won't. |

I would recommend looking into 3/8in perch drop or buy the correct set of springs before cutting springs.

Dont' even consider cutting the springs. In addition to whats said about the spring rate it's also a safety concern. Back in the day I had a friend who cut the springs on his Geo Metro and they'd pop right off the perch because they no longer would seat correctly.

I've cut springs on my '84 Toyota Supra and '98 Eclipse.....drove for about 7-8 years with no real problem........
The only issue I had with it was the ride was hella bouncing.......... Yeah.....spend a couple of hundred bucks and buy a new set of spring is probably the better way to go.......
