Painting Calipers
I painted my calipers over the weekend and am very happy with the results!
I rushed a little and only did two coats but even then I reckon it's turned out very well and all who have seen it so far have been impressed (...right guys?) If anyone is interested in doing it (SBC, Jeef, Cruvon?) then I can organise everything for you guys and we'll spend the day painting (I've got jackstands and jacks) I ordered the paint from the US (very high quality, high temperature, 'self-levelling' paint). > ebay link < The only issue is that it costs more than the stuff from Supercheap Auto, BUT this stuff lasts a lot longer, gives a great glossy enamel look and won't chip (I guess time will tell though) One kit (~$80) can stretch to 3 cars/12 calipers, but in hindsight I'd rather do 2 cars with about 4 coats for a real solid finish. I have a red kit unopened that I bought for myself (couldn't decide on red or yellow at time of ordering so ordered both :P) so can 'on-sell' this paint to someone if interested (Cruvon - do you want red?) If someone wants another colour (white/black/gold/yellow/orange/green) I'll order the paint, but it's a lot more cost effective to get another car done in the same paint colour. ie $80 for one car, or ~$35ish each if the same colour. The paint doesn't keep because to give the glossy enamel finish you need to mix it with an 'activator' (shelf life after mixed is about 6hours) Sydneysiders, put your name down and colour preference? Oh and one last thing, I can organise high-temp stickers as well to go on the calipers. Subtle "BMW" lettering would look great (ala stock 135/335 calipers) and the sticker can be any colour you like (eg: black stickers on yellow calipers, white stickers on red). Stickers are a few $ extra, price TBA. |

I would love to paint my calipers red. Ultimately id love to get the Brembo BBK but im sure BMW wouldnt like that and void my warranty.
Few questions for you. Did you actually remove the caliper and paint it? Have you had a chance to go for a nice run and really heat up the brakes? If so, did you notice any paint burning smells? Lastly and most importantly |

Only the 135i has the BMW lettering and proper BBK flat surface caliper. Personally I think BMW lettering on the other calipers will look a bit tacky but up to the individual I guess.
I'm going to chicken out and opt for a pot of black paint. Anyone care to share with me? I'm still a bit iffy about how the calipers will look when dirty. |

Yep I went for a nice run as soon as I painted the calipers AND when warmed up it actually aids in the 'caking process'. The instructions recommend leaving the car for 24hours before driving but I had dinner plans so had to go nearly straight away (after scrubbing my hands for nearly 10minutes to get rid of the nasty brake dust of course) and when I got to the city the paint was nice and warm/hard - next day, no issues. Will keep you posted as my wheels get dirty, it rains, I go through car washes, spray degreaser on it, etc. Here is a quick pic from the other thread, close up pics tonight when I'm home |

As easy as repainting them again.
If going from darker colour to lighter colour, maybe you'll have to do a few more coats but I'm sure it's doable. My friend says the paint will last 'forever' and after seeing the blue calipers on his Mini they are still in great condition two years on. |

I just used a caliper spray from Auto One. Will see if it holds up, if not might just buy the performance brakes from BMW.

Your ones look heaps good Stu, props on being the show car and providing us with some expertise

Black is more subtle
I would save red for really sexy brakes (ie brembos or a BBK) Jeef I think the BMW Performance is slightly gold in colour? Gold is available as a colour option as well and I think that would look great - less flashy (not as bright). In hindsight maybe I should of gone gold. Wopalx, unfortunately I am a bit sceptical about the sprays - although yours did look good yesterday (except for some slight overspray in areas ) Good luck with it holding up and if it starts to flake off then I'd be happy to help you paint them |

... also if anyone wants to put their hubs at the same time we can do that too.
Silver with silver wheels, black with black wheels - those combos look great. |
