One thing people, have submitted an offer for an M3 wheel.....however it states, I may need another steering "slip ring" will this be the case for and SE car? I think not....but just to confirm

Firstly, can you ask him/her what he means by steering 'slip ring'?

Thumbs up

I not so long ago changed my SE specrim for Nick's old M3 paddle shift equipped steering wheel.

Being an M3 wheel I've got tri-stitching and a nice thick leather rim

Plus Nick equipped it with the extended paddles as well. It's a great mod the left hand paddles does down shifts while the right hand side paddle takes care of the upshifts, seems strange that I'm explaining it this way but the reason behind the explanation is down to BMW adopting a push/pull setup on both the paddles on the standard SE rim. Strange that, but once used you'll be addicted.

On the slip ring question the new M3 wheel went straight on my SE took 20 odd mins to do.

Incidentally if anyone wants an SE rim let me know as I've still got my old one at the moment.

I think bimmerw's concern is that his steering wheel looks different. The airbag is bigger, isnt circular and is more of a pentagon shape. Can anyone confirm whether he can just whip on an M3 wheel?

If no luck then create a seperate thread, i'm sure someone would know.

The wheel in in wooo hooo, thanks Mob/Sam for you help and advice. Took me an hour approx as I was nervous handling the airbag and did not want it going off so was extra carefull. I disconnected the battery, left it for 5 minutes, stuck the key in to discharge any power that may be left in the system. Used the guide that was in AWBimmers thread.

I swapped the fascia plate over as I prefer the SE chrome trim (the M3 fascia & buttons are up for sale if anyone interested PM me), then re fitted. Went to put the airbag in and it would not clip in all the way there was 1cm gap all the way around. So I took everything back out, swapped the metal plate inside the wheel over from my old one and the airbag clipped in nice and snug

Here is a couple pics
Before

After

With Bimmerw question if you steering wheel is the triangle version then the M3 steering wheel will fit but you will have to buy a new airbag as you cant re issue the one from you old wheel as it is a different shape.

That normally happens when you change something relating to the battery, for me it was when adding/removing amps. It should go.

I have cleared the error code and went out on mini drive just to ensure battery topped up with charge and error gone now

The steering wheel just feels so much better and can feel a bit more road feedback thought the wheel imo

i dont know if this is just psychological but the old one was slightler hard leather and this one is more foam cushion leather - dont know if this helps or not but those thinking of doing this is the best mod so far imo

Yeah M3 is more soft cushion-ee material, makes for such better road feel IMO!

I'm sure you'll love it! Great car. Just be careful of the old bill, way too easy to get into silly speeds on both the 335s.

I'll be getting my new m3 wheel with paddles this week!

I'm not looking forward to fitting it tho, but if I change the interior I'm sure i'll get this mod done?!

Owner forums are always dangerous.... & not good for the bank balance! I already got the m sport wheel but I want the coloured stitching & f1 paddles!!!! I hope it's worth the money!
