Cost to paint a carbon fiber hood?

I just got a used VRS 35 hood and am looking to get it painted (sparkling graphite). How much do you think it will be? So far in the Bay Area (California), I'm hearing $650-$1,300. I don't need it to be perfect.

I've read that it's harder to get the paint to adhere to the gel coat, so it's more than a stock hood.

That sounds outrageous! My body guy charged $200 or $250 to sand and color match a steel hood on a friend's 328i. I can't really say for carbon fiber - I only had the sides of mine painted and it was done at the same time as the rest of my car. But I would guess $400, maybe $500 at the very most. Try smaller independent shops with less overhead costs.

^+1 should be anywhere from $200-400 at most depending on how you want to paint it

Id like to see pictures of the paint fade. I have a red E90. I am getting a carbon hood and want to do something nice with the paint.

I ended up paying just under $600 at RJ's paint shop in livermore, CA. They've done quite a few v35 hoods. That included prep work since it was used plus over an hour of install time. I had a steel hood painted a couple yrs ago for 400 so I think I could have gotten it for less somewhere else. It was next door to the clear bra shop I wanted to go to for custom hood bra, so it worked out well. I'm very happy with the results. Color matches the car perfectly. Shiv's lambo was there getting some paint work as well. I was not in a position to shop around. I picked up the hood locally off the forums here and drove it to the shop in a custom box & tie-downs on my roof rack. it was quite a sight.
