Looks like it may be a Hartge product. I e-mailed them, but looks like I'll have to wait till after new years to get a response. Here's another angle...

I wish BMW would use that gps/radio display to be able to show OBD data in a user configurable analog instrument style, copying the main instrument design.

Yes weird - just looked up hartge.de, and the picture is there but no info. Nevertheless, doubt it if you could even get a 52mm Defi in there.

I'm not going to drive a car without a coolant gauge, so considered many as well, being Defi, Autometer system as Defi (seems to have died?), Dashdaq, Scangauge, PLX and a few others. Many become ridiculous pricey if you want 3 gauges, and we've got no room to put them anyway. I ended up with the Dashdyno from Auterra.com as best choice, installed in my ashtray, matches BMW interior fairly well, and lots of play options. And if I don't want to see it I close the cover..

Only problem with the ashtray is that it's not very functional. I prefer it to be as close to periferal vision as possible. I was gonna take Retrodrive's idea and install 3 gauges in place of the heated seats, but once I removed the trim I realized that there is no room unless you go with very shallow gauges. Im probably gonna retrofit my own pod that looks similar to the Hartge one in the pic above. Im just not too excited about having to drill a hole in my dash.

No disagreement but it also depends on how often you really need to see this data. Yes it's great to see boost going up to 20psi (diesel..) but after a while you get used to it. If one is worried about over pressure / temperature etc this dashdyno allows one to set whatever warning light strategy you want.

Don't get me wrong, i do prefer analog full sweep instruments by far. But where to place. You could replace the central air vents etc and put instruments there - but hardly practical. And I haven't seen any gauges yet that match the BMW style. When data is displayed numerical it is much less pleasing to look at, certainly if it changes a too high rate. So in that case i prefer it to be out of direct sight.

I don't want all this Nissan Skyline stuff, but BMW could do a nice job on something similar

Wow...that's sick! This is stock on the GTR? Tisk tisk, BMW is slacking. Our idrive is garbage...at least pre-09 is. Dunno if it has improved much for 09.

I contacted Hartge regarding the gauge pod in the first photo. They told me, "That was exclusively made for the H50 V10." My guess is that it is a fake gauge/pod....looks pretty sick though. In the second pic you can even see the leather on the pod is not wrapped properly.
