I deal with BMW salesman all the time, usually they are making 100k and up, have seen some claiming 60-65k, I would say an average would be 75ish for a middle range salesman. Not a bad living but the hours and dealing with crazy customers is annoying.

Ever thought about going to school to be a BMW tech? It's really the best of both worlds. You don't have to deal with joe public very often, you get to be around the cars and learn something new everyday, you never ever know what you are going to run into making each day different. There's some stress and BS, most of it revolving around flat-rate, but for the money it's easy to deal with.

I personally went to tech school for 6 months, went to BMW STEP for 6 months, then made 53K my first year. Second year I made 71K, third year 76K, 4th year 85K, and now I'm in a salary position into 6 figures, all at the ripe old age of 27. And I'm in a city that has low cost of living.......certainly nothing like NY.

I personally love my job........couldn't see myself doing anything else.

I've thought of selling BMW's too. I've got a few questions for CA's out there....

How do you deal with difficult customers?
Have you developed techniques to help you cope with them?
Do Sales Managers constantly pressure you to produce results or do they leave you alone?

Thank you.

No problem you needed the AWD more than I did. I am glad I was able to help you out. Plus I got to blast around in a 335i. Big sleeper in Deep Green with Beige Leather. I really realized how much I HATE AUTOMATIC after driving that car. The power and the feel of the car SCREAMS for a stick. Other than that I really enjoyed the car. I drove the car for a week so I logged a lot more miles than I ever have on any 335.

I'd like to know how our local CAs are doing in todays economic climate.

Please expand...

Also, what is the normal salary for a GSM/SM at a BMW Facility in CA?

Well I have no idea really. I understand new sales are down, but that doesn't mean people aren't selling cars. Also, if I recall BMW has decided to alter its CSI payment plan.

This is called "mid-life crisis." We all go through it. If you have wife and kids like myself, it is hard to start all over from the bottom. The beer helps.

interesting read, and I didnt think the sales people would be making $250K... I must be in the wrong industry here...

but an "average joe" can start out $75K is still pretty good.... I still remember that my first job, as a financial analyst started just at $55K too... and I went through a ton of school + interns.. and hell, I dont exactly like it too...

you should be making six figures, period... if youre not close to that number, youre simply not a great sales person. i work closely with people on the floor at dealerships and if you got a knack for it, youre defintely in the six figures. if you completely suck, youre making shit money and wont be around for long, if youre average, you will make an average living.

like someone said early on in this thread, to make good money in the business, the hours are usually killer. althought, I have noticed that here in canada, the bmw dealerships have better hours then most other lots.

I know it's always annoying when someone bumps an old thread, but this was an extremely engaging read. Do any current CA's on this board want to give an update?

I think the points stated are exactly true in this thread. I worked for a BMW dealer here, in service accounting for most of my time. I tried sales, but the hours killed me. Its very possible to make great money, but you cant really have a life outside of work.

Anyone in the business long enough knows how it goes when Mgt starts to step on your deals to move units -taking customers from you, giving away gross- doing the scummy things that happen in domestic stores , lying to your customers then backcharging you 200.00 when the survey comes in chitty, cheating, stealing your gross, giving your customers to new, favored salesmen brought with them from hyundai dealers,Loading up a 4 man sales floor that did 35-50 new BMW's a month to 13 salesmen who know NOTHING ABOUT BMW or its customers(or cared about its customers), etc.........Funny thing is - they never got the volume up ......they are selling LESS cars now than they did when they got there.

By June 2007 I had made 24K ... had to get out of the business and get back to what I did before to take care of family.......

For you neo's who want to get in to the business : BEWARE of scumbags who will tell you ANYTHING and do anything TO YOU to make you starve for them.Ask them to put in writing everything they tell you about the car business at their store.. The response to that request will tell you everything you need to know about them.

In my time at BMW ride and drive's and workshops, I met folks who worked a great dealerships. Management and owners who took great care of their sales staff.I , unfortunately I did not work at one of those..... and the owner of the one I worked for had no interest in making his store a real BMW center.

In retrospect - I wouldn't want to sell any other car - I went to Mercedes Benz after that for a few weeks and it was even worse - and the passion for the product ? Not even close.

Do your research carefully, guys.......
I feel this happened to me as well. Not as drastically, but the sales just started to go down, and the managers were letting the few customers we had walk. My income went down so drastically that I had to make a move. It was such a tough decision, since I was the go to guy at my dealership for everybody to ask questions about the cars. I will always miss the BMWs that I got to play and drive around in. The Ride and Drives were incredible. Everything about that job was amazing, except for the sales and hours.

My brother is a die hard BMW fan and of cars in general. All he talks about all day is cars when we are driving he's constantly lookin around at all the cars on the road. He's about to buy an 09' 335i coupe he worked 3 jobs to be able to get it (from 7:00am-11:00pm he's at his jobs), he's one of the most determined 19yr olds I know. I told him to read this thread and he did and now he's excited and wants to be an CA. he says he doesn't know when to start or how to go about applying I told him I would replay an ask (he doesn't want to join the forum until he gets his 335i, he's weird like that) but if any one has any information on how to get your foot in the door please post. He has this page bookmarked on his computer and I'm SURE he'll check daily so any advice is very appreciated.
