Won't start. Probably gelled up

Hey Guys, I drove to Denver this week and Im pretty sure the fueling station I stopped at didnt have their winter blend in because I cant start my car. It turns over, sounds like its going to run and then just cranks.

I put in 4 bottles of Heet for diesel, talked to the dealership and they suggested putting the key in, leaving it in accessory mode and it will automatically turn the glow plugs on...I guess....

I talked to someone about this and he said that once this happens you have to replace the filters....Im not buying that, but does anyone have any first hand knowledge/experience?

Thanks

Btw..the car was sitting for 3 days... -5 F this morning

Ouch. Was that the recommended dosage for the "Heet"?

You might need to get it towed somewhere you can put it inside and/or heat up the fuel filter/fuel lines. If things are gelled, there's not a lot you can do. Also, I wouldn't suggest trying to continue starting it if the HPFP is starved for fuel due to gelling. Without fuel to lube the HPFP, it'll wear rapidly.

This is one of those "School of Hard Knocks" lessons. Even though BMW doesn't recommend adding fuel supplements, using something that lowers the cold filter plug point (CFPP ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_filter_plugging_point) in extreme conditions is something to consider.

I was actually on the phone with a BMW tech and they were the ones that said Heet(obviously the Iso heet, diesel version), and suggested 4 bottles, 48 oz..

Supposedly it "prevents" line freezing.

What Im really confused about is that it SOUNDS like its going to start....crank crank...then it fires for a few revs, then cranks again, so Im not sure if its getting fuel or not. I would think if it was getting nothing, it wouldnt fire...seems like its getting some but not enough to maintain it...

Getting it into a garage could be problematic...

-5 degrees?! Holy crap. And here I am in SoCal whining about the 40 degree weather in the morning when leaving for work. I should count my blessings.

Update: ITs ALIVE

It took a little work and a tip from the dealer... put the key in, push start without foot on the brake....it will go into accessory and the glow plugs and filter heater will stay on...

After a few tries it started to fire up more and more....until it stayed running,,roughly at first..but running.... You could hear the fuel pump ( I assume) whine for the first minute or so...

But its running and Im going to fill up and put in some Power Service...

Excellent. Once it's going and the fuel filter heater is working, and the system warms up, I'd expect you should be good. But the white bottle of Power Service should help you in similar situations in the future. Best of luck.

Where did you get fuel in December that wasn't D-1 winter? If you're further south, might always be a good idea to ask the attendant if they've switched over to D-1. A bottle of White PS with D-2 should help some, if you can't get D-1. The accessory pre-heat may help for a few minutes, but you need to get some good winter stuff in the rest of the tank, or you risk gelling up again.

-5ºF...that's starting to get cold. I was driving around in -5 to -10ºF in late-October. Guys out in the prairies are getting their brass ones handed to them in the -10 to -15's...brrr...

Stay warm!

Cheers
D.

strange, it sounds like the glow plugs werent working properly in the first place. We shouldnt have to force the plugs to warm up the cylinders by going through that process.

He needed to turn on the heater in the fuel filter and probability give the product some time to work. Glow plugs won't help if the injectors can't provide a constant supply of fuel.

Ouch.

We had some -10 to -14F lows last week. At a balmy 21F this morning. The 335d's glow plugs are amazing in how fast they heat up. I'll get at most a fraction of a second pause and the glow plug light after hitting the start button on cold mornings or after sitting outside all day at work. My Cummins truck takes ~10 seconds to heat up its intake grid heater (no glow plugs) when it is cold...

-26 is getting pretty cold for diesel.

Predicting daytime high of -30 down to -34C overnight for Sunday. I don't really like driving around in those temps. If I can avoid these temps I do but sometimes you just can't avoid it.

Looking at your weather forecast you are getting the stuff the just rushed through here yesterday and today.

Glad our fuel is rated to -38C.

Damn I was annoyed at the 11f we had here in NY, lol. Good thing I got a remote start for my car. Makes waking up at 5am everyday more bearable.
