Most bmw owners want RWD which is part of the reason they purchased it. I think its a shame the R8 isnt RWD. Its not really needed here in the UK to be honest. In a 911 turbo then granted its needed. Its a very powerful car. In a 300-350HP car? I aint so sure.

Most BMW owners on here may or may not buy for that reason, but take our neighbours one with an E90 320d and the guy further up with an E90 325i - neither of them know anything about cars and one probably doesn't even know that his car is RWD. The R8 V10 needs to be 4WD for the 'average' driver Carl. Believe me, not every one who buys one of those or a Porsche Turbo necessarily knows how to drive it! GT2 on the other hand............ So you could spec a 335d with 2WD and someone else could spec. 4WD - be nice to have the choice is all I'm saying. |

Yeah the F458 Doesn't need 4WD and has 560HP.
I do understand what your saying. I just dont think the UK needs that option.

It seems to me that BMW UK are intent on linking RWD to their ulimate driving machine tag line...so maybe more marketing led i.e. they dont belive uk would buy enough 4wd Beamers?

Quite possibly and cost differential for the UK market perhaps but it does rain alot here lol. Or they could 'hone' the driver aids and use some more sophisticated systems that truly divert power front/rear axles, combined with the generally very good steering, could be a way to go without sacrificing too much driver involvement...........or rather not enough that the average 'joe' would notice. You lot being the exception of course!

Wonder if the 'X' E9* range suffer with skitterish behaviour and inside tyre wear out of interest or whether the toe-in set up is different? |

The discouraging factor for BMW in offering the 3er XDrive models in the UK is due to the immense cost of re-engineering the xDrive system for RHD cars, especially when weighed against the potential sales of the 4WD versions. Audi effectively have the 4WD compact executive market sewn up as they have been marketing the Quattro drivetrain for 25 years and actively design every car they make to be able to have 4WD in RHD applications. BMW have major problems engineering the front axle to be actively driven as the entire basis of their car (not X3, X5 etc) platforms are inherently RWD, as opposed to Audi who design their cars as FWD, then extend an active driveshaft and differential down to the rear axle (and this is a much easier engineering prospect)

4WD or RWD...both have their advantages...
what is annoying is all the stupid dtc, dsc driver's aid/ cutting power crap....preventing wheels spinning shit....these "aids" shouldn't be installed in 335i or 335d coupes...which are performance sports cars, and yes we don't need those crap... on a family saloon maybe...but not on a 335 coupe!!! |

4WD depends very much on the implementation. Where the drive is sent to the front wheels until traction is lost, you get all the FWD disadvantages of lack of steering feel and a tendency to understeer. In systems where most or all power goes to the rear until traction is lost, you get rear wheel drive feel with the bonus of all wheel traction when needed. That's how the 911 works and given that BMWs are normally rear driven, how I would expect the BMW system to work, and I would buy another proper 4WD car.

I drove TVRs for 11 years in all weathers including snow and ice, and while it focussed my attention on the task in hand, it was quite manageable. I could happily live without all the electronic aids except ABS, which I believe is essential. |
