The entire valve cover gasket. Once it's compromised, likely in one of the runners like 335stoner suggested, it'll fill the crankcase with pressure and likely force oil out of the turbo seals and the rest of the valve cover and your oil fill cap.

If the ccv is clogged you will force oil through the turbo seals. It happened to my tdi once where plastic cracked and got stuck in the hose that goes to intake. I found out by taking the oil cap off while idling and saw more than normal blow-by. I was able to temporarily vent ccv to atmosphere by taping closed the intake side so I could get home and fix it. After that temp fix, the smoke subsided and the turbo worked fine.
Do you have any smoke or vapour yo the left of the egr where the intake goes down into the turbo? If so, maybe your ccv rubber hose that goes into that intake pre turbo broke. Fixmyvw aarodriguez sells a replacement for that short rubber hose which often cracks. |

What fails or clogs in the valve cover to pressurize the ccv? Is there some kind of oil separator in the cover that can carbon and clog up??

So you're saying that the round intake ports go in the though the valve cover and have gaskets that can leak boost into there? I thought intake goes into the side of the head, but with this split swirl ports design I'm clueless...
Edit: I see now in real oem that yes the round ports are part of the valve cover! http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=11_4223 |

Top intake port goes into the valve cover and then into the head. I assume it leaks there and boost pressure makes it's way inside the engine forcing oil out.

It’s the valvecover gasket. Failed/ leaking intake orings O-rings won’t pressurize the engine/ crankcase.

There's some pics/video on this page where I used the dipstick tube to measure crankcase pressure/vacuum that might help you diagnose what's going on. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...867543&page=15

32 valves, you had replaced your CCV with a Vaico part. What was wrong with your original, and why did you not replace with oem. They are about $60. I do not trust Vaico.

When I? took the top part off I? f*cked up the tab and it blew off so I? ordered that one from Europe. I? took apart cause oil started blowing out of that.

Power washed the engine and cleaned everything but left covers and pieces off so I? can find the culprit. So I? drove the car to work but drove normal. No oil leaks or exhaust smoke I'm still gun shy to mash it.
