Other countries where drugs are legal, and the drinking age is lower don't seem to have the same problems as we do here b/c they're used to that sort of thing, so they don't abuse it. Personally, I'm not against it, OR for it... but the system we have now seems to be fine.
nicely put...

Excellent idea. Just swap the age requirements. Eighteen to drink and 21 to get a driver's license.

+1 The driving age alone will lower the amount of accidents on the road.

I do think that the drinking age should be lowered. This might cause 18-20 year olds to go crazy for a couple years, but I honestly believe if its legal the problems will eventually go down.

I think fighting for your country, voting, driving, and alcohol consumption should all have the same age requirement.

The idea that you can go kill people in another country but not have a beer is rediculous.

Kids are already getting alcohol with fake id's or some other way in high school, it may as well be 18. We need to quit babying everything. They're going to get beer whether they are old enough or not. It's so easy to find someone to buy it. We never had a problem, and there was always the known "Stop and Rob" that would sell us beer.

My family has always been very open with alcohol around me. At certain times I was able to have one beer while growing up. And I was always give a few sips if I asked as a youngster. In high school my dad would allow my friends and I to have 2 beers while out on the lake. This was always approved by the parents first. And my friends families were they same as mine, open about alcohol.

The more we try to shelter kids and say no, the more they're going to fight. The kids who got the most fucked up in high school and college were the ones whose parents were extremely strict and typically did not drink.

I think we just need to determine as a society when someone is a legal adult , for everything - Sign a contract, buy a beer, be tried as an adult, etc ...

It is ridiculous that we will claim a 14 year old was mature enough to be tried as an adult when the law does not treat him as such in any other manner. It is just as ridiculous to claim that an 18 year old is an adult when it comes to life altering decisions like enlisting or getting married but not to have a beer.

I started drinking at age 14...the alcohol law only applies if you get caught.

I think girls should be allowed to drink when they are 18, but guys, 21

I was drinking legally at 18 in Colorado in the eighties.... it was 3.2 beer, then anything goes once you hit 21. In Wyoming at the same time, it was 19 for everything. The only reason it went to 21 in these two holdout states was that the Feds cut highway funding unless you changed the state law, otherwise the public didn't want it changed.

Basically, it wasn't all that long ago that it was 18...

Wasn't that a pisser for those seventeen year olds hoping for their first (legal) beer only to have the limit raised the day before their birthday.

that is RIDICULOUS lol

and

lets say someone just fought in war and had his legs amputated, he then comes back home depressed and in need of a drink. he goes to the bar, but they turn him down because he isnt 21 yet.

All 18-21 year olds should be drafted into the military, or some other public service. When they get out, then they can drink.

That is pretty ironic isn't it. But hey, their parents are there so they CAN drink.lol

I was drinking and getting my dads beer for him all the time long before I was legal. No one ever said anything. It's a private setting, therefore generally overlooked except by the bartenders.

Even then they're going to drink regardless of age legality. And if they get stationed in a foreign country where it's legal by 18 if not younger they'll be drinking.
