Droning noise from rear

When travelling on the motorway at around 80mph I get a droning noise coming from the rear drivers side? When I settle back down to 70/75mph the droning noise dissapears. It only happens around the 78 mph mark, if I go slightly faster the noise goes away.

I suspect it may be the rear wheel bearing? With this is it best to replace both or can I replace one side? I only think if one is on its way out the other may not be far behind?

Also looking on the ECP they stock Lucas/SFK wheel bearing kits, which is better?

Also how much am I looking for to get both sides done? I presume this is not home DIY as a press may be needed?

I get a droning noise from the passenger seat when I hit 80, and it settles down again when I go below 70. It's the wife!!

Sorry, mistryn. To good to miss !

Doesn't sound like the wheel bearing, as this typically causes a grinding noise around 40mph or so i believe?

Does it still make the noise when you are off the gas?

I had something similar a while back.
Turned out to be just tyres.
Are they getting a bit worn?

Tyres are down to 4mm, the noise is still there about 80 even off the gas

on my old 330i... the exhaust flap was broken and the exhaust was wide open at all revs. This made it very droney at about 75mph, made the inside of the cabin kinda boom a little. Went away below 70 or above 80. very annoying!

Directional tyres are really bad for droning especially when they harden near the end of their life

Mistryn, I have had this before ( previous car).
Tyres or bearings?
I took my car to a friendly garage & ran it up whilst on their ramp. Mechanic listened to rotating wheels in turn and identified a wheel bearing on its way out. He was surprised as he thought it was a tyre!
Don't waste your cash guessing....
