Sub Help!! Which one??

I am on the verge of changing the speakers in my car (130i with base system)

currently own the following:

JL CleanSweep
JBL gto1004 4 Chanel (from previous car)
GroundZero GZRC 100fx (Front)
GroundZero Hydrogen GZHF402X (rear)

I am stuck between putting a pair of SWS 8x under my seats or put a JL CP108LG-W3v3 in the boot??

would appreciate some advice.

Two different animals.

First you have to consider where the mid-bass frequencies will come from. Your 4" door speakers can maybe cover frequencies down to 200Hz. A subwoofer in the trunk can at the most play up to 100Hz, so you'll have a "hole". If you install the SWS-8 they can fill the hole, but not very well, because they were designed primarily for bass response.

Just talking about the bass and sub-bass response from those two set-ups, I would say that the Earthquakes do a decent job and the output level is enough for most people who install them. If you crave for more however, you need a trunk sub. The disadvantage with the sub in the trunk is that the trunk "swallows" a good portion of the sub's output. So if you have a relatively low power conventional set-up, say less than 300W, it may end up not being much louder than the Earthquakes. Plus, you will have vibrations and rattles to contend with. If you go up in power, you will get more bass into the cabin, but the rattles will also increase. To minimize the rattles, and make the trunk set-up more efficient, you can install the sub in a corner-loaded configuration, which sounds really great, or you can go with an infinite baffle install, if you have a ski-pass. If you have fold-down seats, and don't mind driving around with the seats down, then the trunk problem is virtually eliminated. Also, opening the ski-pass can help get more bass into the cabin.

Food for thought!

Firstly thank you for your much valued input

This one of the dilemmas I am going through, I know that the 4" mids are to small to give any kind of mid-bass. So your suggesting that I would be better of having a dedicated Mid-Bass driver under my seats as oppose to SWS-8 Subs, so that way I have all 3 Frequencies (Hi-Mid-MidBass) through a 3 way setup and a Sub for the lows?

Please correct if I am wrong.

Yes, that would be ideal. I think GZ makes midbass drivers that might fit.

If you have fold down seats or a ski pass, I'd reccomend having your subs facing forward a few inches from the seat. If you seal the box off from the rest of the trunk it will sound great, and get loud, with no rattles.
