Pulling the intake isn't the end of the world. Wrestling the plugs into the controller, under the mess of wires etc is!
How come you say it's most likely the controller? I'll have to have a think. Any recommendations for controller brand? I know Beru is OE, but they're out of stock most places and pretty expensive where they are available. |

Because 95% of glowplug codes are due to a bad controller not the glowplug randomly dying. You can try just swapping the one bad glowplug but don't be surprised if others start to die.
Beru or bust.

Well I've ordered plugs and controller. Went with a Hitachi/Huco controller because they seem ok and less than half the price of Beru. I doubt it'll last any less than 40k miles, which is seemingly all I got out of the current Beru one!

If you only have codes for one plug then check the resistance of said plug. Your controller might just be fine. Usually you have an armada of codes when the controller goes.
Hitachi controller is not good. Usually bad plugs kill the controller anyway. Over here there is a guy who restores the OEM controllers along with the power cable and claims to make them better. Has done it for years and haven't heard any complaints, sells a lot of them every winter. You could not get even Hitachi few years ago at winter. But probably is cheaper to just buy beru or oem since its not that expensive. |

Oh dear, I'll have to see how the plugs look. I'll try and avoid using the Hitachi controller if I can, and keep the Beru. But maybe I can get the Beru repaired while the Hitachi is fitted, and keep it as a spare.
The Hitachi controller cost me £65, so that's £100 less than I can find the Beru for (in stock)...and about £200 less than OE. I work on the car myself, so it's not a total waste if it fails quite quickly. Do you have any recommendation other than Beru? Also can you post details/link to the repair guy? |

One of the failure modes of the controller looks actually pretty simple to fix - mainly a hassle cutting the enclosure open and dealing with the silicone:

That's cool, I had no idea it was a physical failure within the module itself. I've got an old one I could probably repair.
