Has anyone ever seen the water pump leak on their 335?

I've got an '07 335i e92 6MT with 75k miles on it. Last weekend I: flushed coolant, changed oil, replaced leaking oil filter housing gaskets, and replaced my damaged OE FMIC with a VRSF part. At no point in time did I tinker in the area of the water pump. Thursday on my commute to work the low coolant light came on.

I've got it up on jack stands now, and the leak is at the pump, or one of the immediately attached hoses. I've removed the 3 visible worm gear clamps, repositioned, and tightened the F out of them, and it's been reduced to a slow trickle. Has anyone seen one of the hoses fail at the the water pump, or seen the water pump itself leak? My water pump works fine, and I can hear water flow thru system.

Near as I can tell, the brown plastic section of my water pump has a hairline crack in it.

The pumps are known to go out as low as few thousands miles to over 100K miles. Its random. I think there's an updated part out, but no history that it has solved the problem.

I've read of them failing, but not of them leaking.

Anyway to epoxy it or JBweld it? I mean you have nothing to lose.

Mine leaked enough coolant out for the light to come on and 300 miles later bam water pump is toast.

I ordered a water pump/thermostat/etc yesterday. I'll do the repair next weekend. I'll just keep a couple gallons distilled water in the trunk, it'll make the repair just that much cleaner

its really not an extremely difficult repair. Someone one who has a general understanding of auto repair can tackle this I think I spent around 3-4 hours doing it. You do need a relatively uncommon tool you need inverted torx bits to get the 3 bolts that hold the WP in place. their is a DIY that is quite useful

Everything was pretty straight forward except for the thermostat quick disconnects. Still cant get those to let go!

Hey Jasson, Fennix - can you let us know how it turned out? Is this a fairly straightforward DIY? Where'd you get your DIY info?

I need to replace the WP and the OFHG - is it easier to do them both at once?

Yes it's a pretty non complicated swap its a tight space and those quick release clamps can be a bitch to actually release but their is a written DIY just follow that.

Oh and just replace them both once the wp is out the thermo is very accessible.

You're going to have to do the water pump eventually. May as well address the leaking water pump with a new unit since it's bound to fail.

OFHG? I worked on it here and there across two days. The only hard part are those damned thermostat hoses.

I replaced the water pump and thermostat at the same time. They're made of similar material, so should have similar life spans.

I just replaced my water pump for the second time in less than 70 days because of the same issue. CRACKED HOUSING! I went ahead and spent the $632 (with tax) on a new one from Oreilly Auto Parts. They offer a lifetime warranty. I am still messing with the ebay seller to get my money back on this defective part.

The same exact thing is happening to me now.... Wow I'm trying to contact the seller
If it doesn't work out. I'll end up trying epoxy or buy another water pump 😡

Anyone ever figure this out? I have a 1 month old water pump with THE EXACT same crack on it as the picture posted by travis94ZX - that can't be coincidence can it?

Where are you all burying these pumps? Are they the old pumps that never got used? Need to make sure you're getting the latest units

My pump went out about 67k, around 76k I got the low coolant warning. Added some distilled water to get me home to the BMW coolant, light came on again. Turned out to be a cracked/leaking water pump. Fortunately it was CPO but still, yes these are common on our water pumps.

I had the original pump replaced at about 60K after it began to throw low speed codes. Then, when the Oilfilter housing gasket started leaking at about 85K, they replaced it under warranty bc they said it was 'starting to leak' - I imagine in the same general area.

I guess these things could be subjected to some flexing in a 335 that gets the boot on occasion. :-)

How does lifetime warranty work on waterpump? 90k miles from now you could get a new one when it fails?

So what ever happened with this? Do you think you can try to mend it somehow? I have the same issue I think. I did a whole lot of stuff (valve cover gasket, oil filter gaskets and some coolant hoses), now I have a slow trickle of coolant. Now looking back at the pictures I took, I see the same kind of crack on my water pump.

Does anyone think this can be fixed? This is my 3rd water pump and now this one is out of warranty. I don't feel like buying another one at either $700 dealership price or $400 from a ECS Tuning.
