Limp Mooooode At Track .... Wtf?!
i was at a track event a couple of months ago (MAY) and went into limp mode on my second run .... went to the dealership and they said i had an oil cooler and didnt need the recall part that was on the early 07 335i models ... what do i have to do to fix it? should i go back and demand a reinstall of a new oil cooler or do i need additional cooling methods for my car? thanks!

run your temperature at 84 degrees and put it on strongest level, put it on the defrost option so it doesnt blow straight into your face and you will see your Oil temperatures drop by at least 20-30 degrees while operating your car at the track........i do it when its a hot day and I get nervous it may limp......it sucks to do in hot weather but well worth it.........

If you track ALOT on Cali then I would recommend going with a Big Oil Cooler and Intercooler setup.........if you run those without a tune on the car then you will probably never come close to the temps you were running in the past.......

Since you live in So Cal I'm guessing you were running at Willow.
Doing so in May probably meant nearly (if not over) 100 degrees. I would avoid running the car at the track in that heat anyway, doesn't make for comfortable driving. If you don't want to upgrade the oil cooler and/or intercooler, another option is to make sure you run race fuel. I mixture of at least 95 Octane will help. Costly yes, but will be helpful. Other than that, stick to track days when temps are below 90 degrees (and preferably below 80 degrees) and with the higher octane you should be fine. But the upgraded oil and intercooler would be the steps to take to make sure you are golden for sure. |

It frankly does not sound like you were overheating your oil. Why spend money on an upgraded oil cooler if you are not 100% sure that was the issue?
Try running pure water in the radiator with Redline Water Wetter. See how that does. Were you shifting at redline every time? If so this seems to be the main cause of limp modes at the track. I agree with Leftcoastman about the 100 octane. I am off to the track this morning and filled almost completely with 100. Costly but cheaper than a new (and arguable unnecessary) oil cooler. A number of people asked and you never answered...do you have a tune?

Last time I was at Button Willow, track temps were 106F ! You just need to be careful about hot track temps. It hard on your engine, brakes, and tires. When I went, the E39 M5s could only run a couple of laps before hot oil temps. My 06 M3 could only do about 4 laps, before needing a cool down. The 335i with all that turbo plumbing in the tight engine compartment and elevated stress levels is really asking for trouble. At best, you might do a fast lap, and then cruise a lap or two for cool down. Or just wait for cooler temps. If you really drive your car hard, even in 70F temps, you can drive the temps pretty easily over the 280F mark. Driving hard when it is close to 100F will definitely require a reduced duty cycle in your track activities.
