Just picked up my car today. Good thing I got extended warranty just a few weeks ago.
Labour and parts went to $1800 or so. |

One last thing, just checked my invoice and one of the reasons stated due to changing the air intake manifold was "carbon build-up."
My car only has 22,000 kms (14,000 miles) on it. |

GBD, if the invoice shows it, could you post the part number for the intake? I'll find it on realoem, and post the image so we can all see exactly which part had the carbon buildup.

I agree, this kind of news makes me think again about blocking off the EGR and coding it out (assuming that can be done).

Unbelievable that it had to be replaced with so few miles. It's great for you that this happened, just for the peace of mind. Never thought I'd say that about a repair!

I need to get myself educated about the extended maintenance plans. All it takes is one repair like this and it's virtually paid for itself. I bet you're thanking your lucky stars for buying your plan!

Yes I am DD but for me it really was a no brainer. It pretty much has already paid itself off.

That is crazy. Seems a little suspect this had to be replaced.

I have heard of this before.
Earlier I had a E46 330d where the turbo was worn out and needed to be replaced. At that incident I saw the inside of the intake manifold. It was all black and filled with some black residue from the EGR inlet. At that point the car had done +300.000km I had it until 542.000km and had no problems with that myself though. And yes, it is possible to blind the EGR and code it. I have seen this on other coding fora.
