Window Tint Ticket?

So I'm driving along, minding my own business, and out of no where I see red & blue lights. I pull over, and the cop come up to me and says, "Sir, I pulled you over because I don't like your windows,".

Baffled, I ask whats wrong (My car is completely stock, not one mod yet). He get a little machine and measures my window, and it reads 35. And tells me that has to be 70. I look at him confused, roll up my window, and point to the sign that says BMW. You know the one that tell it's stock. He totally ignores it and gives me a $120 ticket.

I don't even know who I'm mad at more. The dealer for selling me an illegal car (I'm in Iowa), or the cop that doesn't care it's stock, or gives me a warning, just a ticket.

I didn't know BMWs came with stock tints on side windows. Can the tint be peeled off? If it can, then it's not stock.

Lol... I was in Michigan in my Supra one year and got pulled over... same situation. Long story short, I was very illegal in both my registered state and Michigan. Cop was cool though and just let me go. You will run into both the assholes and the cool ones, just be thankful when you get the cool cops.

I know they are tinted. It doesn't seem to peel off. It's stock, as far as I know.

Google for your local tint shop, have em remove it for 100$ (which will be cheaper than the hundreds in tint tickets you could potentially get.)
Problem solved.

If you purchased the car new with that "dealer installed option" tint, I'd go back to them and make them pay the ticket, remove the tint, and replace it with legal tint.

If you had a tint shop do it, I'd go back to the tint shop, make them pay the ticket, remove the tint and replace it with legal tint.

If you did it yourself, I'd scrape the tint off, pay the "fix-it" ticket, and never do my own tint work again

Both will have a good laugh at you and remind you that you signed a form where you explicitly stated that you know that you are getting illegally tinted windows and that you assume all liability for it. If the dealer (or tint shop) were so stupid as to sell an illegally-tinted car without properly transferring the liability, then, of course, you have a case against them. But only in that case.

Car dealer often sell "dealer-tuned" cars with illegal dealer-installed tint. If you ask the dealer about it, they will say "Oh... This car came to us from another state with more liberal tint laws. We will remove the tint before selling it". In reality they don't expect to have to remove it. They expect the buyer to sign the form and accept the risk. (Of course, the car is specifically targeted at buyers who want tint, despite it being illegal.)

Re-read. I said if you bought the car new. As in, not a used car. As in they were the only ones to have it before you. If they knowingly broke the law and installed illegal tint they are culpable under the law regardless of what you signed. Contracts dont give you the right to break the law.

$100 ? That's steep my local tint shop only charges $30 for removal. I was just in there last week getting my windows tinted!

That's what I'm talking about. New car. One BMW dealership in my area sells an absolutely brand new black 335. However, it has some additional dealer-installed equipment (a list of what is added is attached to its window). That includes: smoked rims, smoked badges, window tint, matte black grilles etc. Again, the car is sold as new. Yet, it is tinted. And it is illegally tinted for CA (too dark).

When I asked about the legality of the tint, I got the explanation I posted above.

No dealer in their right mind will sell an illegally tinted car without making the buyer to sign the corresponding papers. If they forgot to do it somehow - the buyer has a case. If the buyer actually signed the papers ... well, him trying to squeeze money from the dealer afterwards for his own mistake has a major "asswipe" karma attached to it. Everyone decides for themselves.

He must have missed his donut shop run... Take the car back to BMW and have them pay for the ticket for selling you a car that has illegal tints.

Bought it used from a BMW dealership. I'm planning on calling the courts, because my lawyer said most time they just remove the ticket if you remove the tint, just call and ask them. If not, going to the dealership and yell at them for a while. Then accept the fact I'm out $112 and pay the damn ticket.
