How do you reset your counter after you change your oil or does it automatically do it by it self?

No, you don't. You can do it yourself. The handle you use for turn signals is all you need. It has a scroll Up/Down in the middle and a BC button at the tip. Scroll up or down until you see the Oil icon on your dash -> Press the BC button to select -> press and hold for 5 seconds until you see a little clock working (this indicates that the oil odometer is resetting). DONE! That's it. For better clarifications, go on YouTube and search for How to reset BMW Oil.

Changed my oil today

Great site Got around to changing my oil today after reading the how to's posted here.

Couple of fine points:

1) The oil cap on top of the valve cover does not "twist off". You twist to loosen the flip it up. Not intuitive.
2) If you local Walmart only sells the 5 qt jugs of 0W40 ($26 X 2) and you need 7 qts...how do you measure the final 2 qts? Well I poured one 5 qt jug into the engine then poured 2 qts into the empty 5 qt jug. Could have just poured out a bit at a time from the new jug, but this way you know it is right the first time.
3) The drain plug goes in sideways (pain).
4) You cannot reset the oil life if there is any sort of other alarm present (such as the right rear bulb alert). Had to drive around a while to clear that POS alarm.
5) The oil filter was pretty snug when twisting the cap back on (normal?) and the "dots" did not line up perfectly when I got done.
6) E-92, sport suspension and new rhino ramps ($40, Walmart).... leaves no room. Had to start with a 2X4 prior to the ramp.

Question??

Oil light in my daughters 07 E92 came on low so I added two quarts. Hit the reset and it reads OK with the Oil level line in the middle.
Do I add more oil to get that line to Max?

Thanks

Let it settle first. Mine showed 'half' at first after my most recent oil change, then a day later showed max - and hasn't changed since...

For you guys buying the 5 litre jugs, like how LiquiMoly comes, how are you measuring 6 litres?

Is there a major difference between a BMW synthetic oil and something like Mobil 1 or Royal Purple?

It seems most use the BMW synthetic, so what's the difference? It doesn't seem that much more expensive than any other synthetic oil on a DIY budget.

Thanks!

hey OP, im curious where you got those tire lift things for your oil change

You know 1K for your first oil change is way too early right? the factory oil usually has solvents in it for the break in procedure which you removed.

Erm...so why is the break-in service oil change on M cars at 1,200 miles?

1. the poster of this thread does not have an M car

2. the break in procedure for an engine is roughly 3000 miles. can you not argue that not all the metal flakes in your engine will be removed with just 1200 miles of driving? (unless of course, you break-in your motor the "fast way" with a couple redlines)

3 ways to change oil on dipstickless...

First off Hello everyone...

I was reading and reading and contemplating out of the 2 ways to change my oil in a dipstick-less engine. Here are the cons for the 2 ways I have read.

Overnight drain.
You leave your engine open to outside humidity for an extended amount of time. Now I am sure that this might not be to extremely bad if your in a garage or another environment controlled area but if you have it parked outside on the driveway and it rains this could provide a very humid air in the crankcase area.

Warm/hot drain.
You have oil that is heated when you drain and you could burn yourself with hot oil. Also you could get oil on other headed car parts. This could leave a unwanted smell on the car.

So I decided to provide another idea for people who might want to utilize it.

Cold drain and Measure.

The reason most people do hot/warm or overnight drain is they want to remove as much oil as possible to not over fill car. This method requires that you keep an eye on your oil level prior to letting your car cool down. If your oil level is at the top then replace the oil with the exact same amount you removed. If your oil level is mid way down then add 1/2 qt to the total and if your very low add 1 qt to the total. You will want to make sure you keep track of the oil you remove from your filter. You will not want to toss anything into the oil drain pan like O-rings and such. Remember that you will still want to check your oil level after and add more oil based on the results once it is warmed up. This method does require that you are very skilled in changing oil due to the fact if you spill oil or do not capture it you will be using a fuzzy number to fill up your car.

PS.. Get a magnetic oil drain plug...

Not heard of green oil if I’m honest haha. Shell for me, same as BMW use within their workshops 😁 although a lot of people think it’s still Castrol as it was when the E90 was new? 😂

Heads up tip for everyone:

FCP Euro has a LIFETIME warranty on consumables such as oil, brakes, filters, spark plugs... literally everything they sell including OIL. Sure, you have to pay for ground shipping to send it back for a refund when you're done, but this really is legit. I have no affiliation with FCP, but I order everything from them these days. Great customer service, help, and the lifetime warranty is so good.

I'm new to the n54 scene. Tryna figure out which oil is best to use, Castrol gtx or liqui moly molygen?
Here in the UK both are about the same price.
5L is around £40-42.

Liqui Moly is a very good brand. I understand it is fully synthetic oil with BMW Longlife-01 rating which is recommended by BMW. My mechanic used Leichtlauf High Tech 5W-40 for the warm Australian climate. This is ACEA A3/B4, API SP, BMW Longlife-01 rating. For the UK climate and especially if regularly driving on short trips, you should probably use the OE grade oil such as 5W-30. (Assuming your car is not primarily used on a circuit or track day etc.)

I'm not familiar with Molygen, but it seems to have similar spec, except for an API SN rating.

I don't think Castrol GTX is synthetic oil, so in that case it would not have a BMW rating at all.
