LOL, this happened to me! I got stranded for 3 hours on a major bridge in DC on a Friday afternoon during rush hour. My 335i had temp tags and only 2700 miles. People were giving me the dirtiest looks and I made traffic back up for miles and even made it on the traffic radio.

My C63 had the navigation system fail with 500miles on the odometer as well. But, I guess at least I could drive it to the dealer.

Yeah, people here I think "understate" how dangerous it could be to have the HPFP fail on you while on a major highway in transit to a destination. The first BMW I considered buying was an E92 335i based on looks alone. I opted for a 328i after I read about the problems with the 335i (lemon buyback, HPFP, wastegate rattle, etc). I'm glad I did, because for the year or so I owned it, it was rock solid.

My HPFP failed on me twice but luckily I wasn't on a highway either of those times.

Do you have any statistical data regarding the percentage of 335s that have encountered a HFPF failure?

Question

Obviously I don't because BMW would protect that information unless forced to reveal it by law (which they may have to if someone dies as a result of a failed HPFP). It could be 30% or as low as 1%, who knows? But you probably already knew that, so I don't understand the point of this question.

Do you have statistical data regarding the percentage of people killed while engaging in street racing? (I do)

* Average yearly fatal accident death rate in US: 37,000
* Average yearly fatal street racing related deaths in US: 135
* Percentage of street racing deaths out of total crash related deaths in USA: .3%

Hey I guess everything is alright, 0.3% ain't bad...... except if it happens to you or someone you care about.

The HPFP has stranded people, and even put people into unsafe situations on fast, high traffic, highways (dozens of threads here, 6SpeedOnline, etc). Truth.

Are you honestly going to try and make the argument that the HPFP failing during operation of the vehicle is "cool" as long as it's not statistically significant (whatever that would entail), or am I reading your "question" wrong?

Very fast, no question.

Unfortunately though, I have not had a chance to take any through the twisties

But, in a straight, they're quick, but they're lack or torque compared to a C63, or a fully moded 335i, is a disadvantage no?

I've seen people on this forum with dynos pushing upwards to 450 hp and torque on their 335s... that... is quick don't you agree?

The 335 is very heavy in the corners compared to the e46 M3 (which I have had a chance to drive through the twisties numerous times), and I'm sure not as nimble as the e9X m3
But with a good set of coils, sways, and such, I don't see why it couldn't compete.

Wasn't there a video of a Dinan 335 vs a m3?
and it was very close? I forgot the outcome though
But we all know that Dinan mods are overpriced nonetheless :P (though great great products)

I really want to take an e9X M3 through the twisties now lol
You can always transplant the M3 suspension over the 335i, then the performance gap is even smaller. I just wish we could get the DCT variant in the states, coz I'm in love with my DCT after the software update.

True

But the price gap between an e93 335i and a M3 coupe isn't that much, so for me, it wouldn't be worth it to cough up the $$
I mean, if performance was number 1 on my list i wouldn't have gotten a 2 ton car :P
But for some, it would :P

LOL I agree with you. I've had my pump replaced once in 37,000 miles and thats the only issue i've ever had with the car. If you take care of your car and not treat the peddle like an on/off switch, you won't have too many problems.

The subject doesn't concern me in the least, but in an attempt to close the HPFP topic and move along, let me try to inject a small measure of unscientific objectivity regarding the subject.

Here's a poll of 335 owners on another forum of the mean miles between failure (MMBF) of HPFPs. Of the 99 335 owners who voted in the poll, 29 (or almost 30%) have had their HPFP replaced at least once. Perhaps more significant though is that of the other 70 owners who hadn't had any issues, only 1 person had more than 30k miles.

Obviously, an online poll like this will have some bias and a larger sample size would be needed for more conclusive results, but not only do these numbers imply that the HPFP problem is widespread, they suggest that these things are ticking time bombs -- its only a matter of time.

And to quickly comment on the C63 predicament... That 6.2L is a real monster, and that car (over a 335) has a aesthetic wow factor that even M3's don't get. I can't comment of the handling of a C63 as I've never driven one... but if it is anything like a CLK63 Black Edition... Rock solid but lacks that real genuine "driver's car" feel.

My HPFP hasn't given me problems yet (knock on wood) but the cranks have been longer recently.

And back on subject... I'm not really a fan of the C63 although the power is there. The C63 guys on mbworld.org are the worst fanboys I've met though... even the guys w/ more expensive cars on there know its their ricer forum.

I've cleaned up all the off-topic BS and bickering in this thread. Let's all try to make sure that it doesn't get hijacked again.

For instance: Jacked21, sounds like some guy who thinks he's huge when really he shot up for a few months.

And finally Brentwood = Southern California!!

But, don't trip dude im sure you worked your ass off. Great job and good luck with the C63!
