Boost Gauge Void Warranty??
As the topic says, I'm curious, if I have a boost gauge in my car, and I'm bringing my vehicle in for service, will they note something on file and void any warranty???
Or should I be fine? All I have on the car is just that boost gauge, no mods at all other than that. |

Manufacturers can not arbitrarily void a warranty.
The only thing they can do is possibly void the warranty of a related part. And even then it has to be proven that the addition of the part led to the failure of the warrantied part. I wouldn't worry about it. |

So if say the turbos failed, they need to prove that the boost gauge somehow caused the turbos to fail. Or if the car lights on fire, they need to prove that tapping the current from the cigg. lighter somehow was the cause of that. Right???

I'm not a turbo expert but I can't see that a properly installed gauge would have any impact on the operation of the turbo. |

There's the law and then there's reality.
They can simply decline you warranty coverage because they believe you modded a car. So where that leaves you is that you will have to persuade them that the guage didn't do anything to cause any problems and failing that you will need to take them to court. That will cost you time, money and aggravation. IMHO, the easier solution is just to take the thing out and not have to worry about BMW service being pricks. |

The gauge is in so tight, like all the tubes are zip-tied up and everything... Taking it off is going to be so much hassle... argh... Like I'm on the fence here.. if I take it off, I'd probably just leave it off and not put it back on. That's why. But if it's going to void my warranty, I'd take it off gladly.

Alright. I'm going to go to Canadian tire and see if I can find something to cap the line with. If I can't, I'll uninstall it. I spoke to BMW, and they told me it can very well void warranty by doing any modification to the vehicle.

I bring mines in with the boost gauge on. My SA actually likes it and told me its a good idea to monitor my boost and watch for spikes.

IMHO, you don't even have a tune in your car....and you bringing in the car just for regular maintaince service, and not asking them to fix something that is broken. I don't see why they will void your warranty!!

they cant really void your warranty unless the failure of a part was caused by the modification. they just say that it will void warranty to scare you because the last thing a dealership wants to do is have to change a part under warranty. they dont make money by fixing things under warranty. if you go to autohaus bmw, you will see what i mean. for a headlight malfunction they tried to make it my fault even though it was a manufacter defect. and at that time i had my intake and bov only, so they cant say that it was cause my installing those. but id suggest for less headache just unplug it like soni says.

I think I'm going to leave it in. I think overall you guys are right. I'm not going to the dealership to report something is broken, so they won't even suspect anything is foul.
Oh... let me give you the background on why I'm asking. I'm going in tomorrow to get the M-Sport steering wheel installed. I can't wait!! I got it next to me on my desk at work right now |

yup don't even sweat it. If it's just for routine maintenance it shouldn't be an issue at all. Next time you call BMW, remember they have to give you the "politically correct" answer of "don't mod anything or it will void your warranty".
