Are the peeps that are getting misfires in cold weather running a piggy? I've had no problems at all down to -40 and a month of -30's. I have a boost guage and notice that the Dinan tune (like stock) lowers boost when it gets colder.

I just got my car back with the same issue as the OP....they replaced 3 of my injectors, all 6 spark plugs and the fuel pump, and flashed to 32.1. The car runs fine now but it threw a code on the way home from the dealer which I got checked yesterday and it shows 2 of my O2 sensors are fried from the original crazyness that went down 3 weeks ago. When the nasty white smoke was coming from the exhaust the injectors were putting WAY TOO MUCH FUEL into the engine. SO they ordered me 2 new O2 sensors and will install them next week. For the time being I still notice that I can see gas fumes from my exhaust on the shadow reflection on the ground....Wonder if thats normal after the whole fix.

I will tell them to call the guys up in Newport News for some tips on how to solve.

Big question is - Does the new valve cover solve the problem? I don't need to go through this crap every 20-25k miles. Car currently has around 23.5k miles.

Thanks,
Scott
Going through same issue now with Cylinder 4. Car has been in shop for 3 days and counting...

Hmmm...I was worried about this. So, how can they diagnose carbon buildup? Do they have to use a borescope down the intake? This concerns me because I think my 335 feels slighly less zoomy than some that I test drove.

I wonder if spraying some fuel injector cleaner or even windshield washer fluid down the intake now and then would help?

Hey...I just remembered...has anyone heard of GM top-end cleaner? A lot of people swear by it. I wasn't sure about using it on a turbo motor, but I googled and found this on a GMC Typhoon forum...

Quote:
GM's "Top End Cleaner" - knock reducer in a can.

Basic principle is that the PCV system spits oil back into the intake, carbon gets built up on the heads/valves, and result in detonation causing, raised hot spots.
This stuff is pretty simple, suck it in while the engine is running, let it sit in the combustion chamber for some time, then burn it all off.

There are 2 versions of the Cleaner, spray, and liquid in a can. I've used the spray can, and many others have used the liquid version.

Spray:

The can leads you to believe its for carb engines leaving you somewhat clueless on where to spray it. My solution was to remove the upper Ic, and spray the cleaner directly into the throttle body. You can just leave the outlet of your turbo open for this, just be careful not to drop anything in there. With the engine running, and your hand on the throttle lever, start spraying into the intake. The cleaner will cause harsh idle, and you may wish to give it a little throttle by rotating the throttle lever slightly as it tries to die (also helps suck in more cleaner). Continue feeding the truck the entire can. When your almost out, go ahead and try to stall it out, if you don't succeed then just shut off the truck. You want it to sit and allow chemical reactions to clean up your cylinders for a good amount of time, the can says 10-20 minutes, you can wait longer. You'll probably notice it smoked alot during the process, and is probably still smoking while you wait for the scrubbing bubbles to do their work. Wait till you start it up again. The resulting plume of smoke should make for a good impression on the ricers next door. Changing the oil is a definite next step. Im not sure about the cleaners effect on the spark plugs, but you may consider doing a fresh ignition at this point. After the smoke clears, you should feel strong and ready to burn off some boost.

BMW of San Diego. Its there again as we speak, took it in on Thursday and hope to get it back no later than Tuesday. They are working on the misfire issue, the rear window that sticks when rolled down, the noisy transmission.

Could carbon buildup explain why my car has a really rough idle at times? Typically my car idles at 600 rpm steadily, but more and more once the car has warmed up, the rpm's will drop to under 500 and bounce up and down as the car shakes. Could that be a misfire or carbon buildup? I'm taking my car in next week for service, just curious if you guys think I should mention this to my SA.

The misfires are most likely because of the carbon build up.

I had misfires on cylinder 2 yesterday on map 6. I have 67200 km on the original plugs so that should be the problem. Car shutters like a bitch. Runs perfect on map 0 though. I guess the plugs aren't up to the task with high boost. Takin it to the dealer so they can see if the coils are gone as well. Anyone else see this issue only when boost is increased?

feel free to say buy the extended warranty...

but still WTF it sounds like this car is going to die right after 4/50k. fuel pump, spark plugs, carbon build up, wastegate rattle, exploding sunroofs, and a few other less frequent things.

So my question is such (for those bmw veterans) ... is there any hope the repair parts for the above concerns will be a different revision that will eliminate the return of this crap ?

Mine was harder to get up than that, the last time took nearly 15 minutes of trying. They replaced the motor and now its working great.

My tech indicated that most of the major problems he services on N54 engine (and he's seen it all) are ultimately related to bad gas.. sucks for those of us in Cali, I don't think these cars were really engineered to run on 91, so now I'm always mixing in a little race gas to raise the octane level.. I wonder how long I'll go before needing a new fuel pump, 7500+ miles and counting though..

bad gas might cause the problem but not if you are stock. and if its a constant misfire in one cylinder its probably the injectors or spark plug

that might explain why fuel pump issues are not known in Europe..

Anyone else replaced their valve cover to remedy the idling issue? If so, do you have a PUMA #?
