The 2009 5 Series uses this same iDrive controller with the old iDrive CCC and the controller connector pin assignments were already known to be the same between the pre-LCI and the LCI... so it was a matter of somebody to test it in a 3 Series.

Longtran just did that.

Now the complete swap of iDrive components is next...

+1 wonder if it'll still pause at end of each screen like my force feedback idrive controller on my MY06 E90. I am interested.

So, to clarify, this plugs into the OEM 4-pin plug like the old controller? Same connector??

It also might be worth mentioning that some cars may not be reprogrammable (not confirmed) if the wrong controller part number is installed - SSS/Progman may want the controller changed out (to the correct p/n) prior to any software updates in the car..

Very nice find tho!!!

Most probably only the main knob will work and not the buttons...

The concern is if these LCI controller buttons will be functional in pre-03/2007 as that iDrive software is quite different from the post-03/07 when the programmable (shortcut) buttons were introduced.

What that could mean is that the new possible software addresses of those dash shortcut buttons are what is being used/mimic by the new controler buttons as well for this to turn out so plug 'n play. So pressing a controller button is actually the same software-wise as pressing one of the shortcut buttons in the dash with the same function.

My guess is that the LCI controller button will not work in pre-03/2007 iDrive just because of not having those software addresses available.

hmmm...that makes sense. damn..I really want to do this but if the buttons are dummy buttons its pointless. Mines a 12/06 production. no-lag production days.
