Lots of time and money invested to investigate deceleration smoke problem
So i spent a good amount of time and money to have my car diagnosed to figure out what is causing smoke during decel. I took it to 2 indys, and a shop that specializes in turbo vehicles. After all of the time and money spent, no one can seem to find what the problem is?? First we tried with the OCC on and off. Then cleaned out the PCV. Then had the intake valves cleaned. Then checked the turbos for any sign of leakage or damage. SO after all of this diagnosis and stuff, everything looked great. There were no signs of leaks at all. So i guess this smoke during decel will remain a mystery.
Do you guys have any experience or thoughts on this? PS- i also get some smoke after some WOT pulls, then stops after a bit.. MODS: JB4, DCI, AR OCC, PLM downpipes, ETS Intercooler, and secondary cats removed. |

Did you do a compression test? I had a similar problem on another vehicle with bad rings. It was only on decel that i would get smoke. WOT was fine, normal drive was ok until i let off.

bad rings will cause smoke all the time, idle, acceleration ect,
its turbo related, the back pressure suck the oil from the turbine shaft, you must have a little shaft play ( side to side) that cause oil leak on decel, it wont cause any lost in performance, but cloud of smoke, turbo rebuilt or new one are required

Could be a leaky injector.. White smoke.

So i had this same problem. i tried a few remedies and with some $ now have it fixed knock on wood... First time i noticed the smoke is when i had put a half of quart too much oil in the car, low oil light came on so it put in a 2 quarts instead of the 1 and a half. The next day i notice smoke on WOT and decel (usually at a light i would see smoke fly pass me) After a week or 2 i decided to change my oil and put in a 6 quarts, to no avail. Then i took off the riss racing occ still nothing. I put it back on and it started to smoke more consistently but was catching oil, go figure... i wet out and bought a BMS occ and boom no smoke... I felt like a champion until 2 days later the smoke came back but much much less. it wasnt on decel( you could smell it tho just not see it) any more just wot and not as thick with. One day after i did a compression and leak down test, i had left the oil cap off and closed the hood( got distracted by a phone call) came out the next morning locked the hood and took the car out, to say the least I left a trail of smoke a mile long but it wasnt blue immdiately lost it, cursing, kicking the curb, sat down and wonder what was wrong and y things were getting worse. popped the hood and there was the oil cap on the cowl.... lol tightened it and smoke was gone.... so a few weeks passed by no smoke then one day out of the blue my nephew was driving behind me and called me to tell me the when i switch gears a puff of smoke come out of the drivers side exhaust told him it was normal and not to worry about it. we come to a light and look what we have here another cloud of smoke. So i decided to do the only thing left which was replace the turbos(had wastegate rattle anyway) Now I can finnaly say ITS GONE!!!! (knock on wood)
P.S. spent a good amount of money tho. lol

PCV and oil separators are in the valve cover. When the throttle shuts on decel, it can suck too much oil into the intake ports if the PCV vacuum limiting system inside the valve cover is bad. It's not cheap, and you will need new injector seals (and the proper tools to install them without damaging them). Much cheaper than new turbos, though!
Valve stem seals could be bad, but how many miles on your car? What oil are you using? How long do you go between oil changes? What color is the metal inside the engine (look inside the oil fill cap)? Brown, tan, gold, or shiny metal?

@jamesm3m5- your response seems reasonable, i will do more research into that....i have close to 60k miles, and i change the oil around 7k miles. And i factory bmw oil..as for engine color i will have to check!

+1 on the bad turbo. Just becasue they don't find any "leaking" doesn't mean the exhaust side of the turbo isn't passing oil. The reason it would smoke is because the turbo would burn the oil off in the hot exhaust, so your evidence literally goes up in smoke. The oil dump usually happens during deceleration with a bad turbo seal. Smokes when you come to a stop, but looks okay while cruising. As it gets worse, you'll also get a big puff on initial acceleration, after the car has idled for a minute, but then the smoke goes away until you stop again.
