BMW 328d @ NYIAS...48mpg
"The last 3-Series with a diesel engine was the 335d, which was an insanely overpowered and remarkably fuel-efficient six-cylinder turbo engine."
BMW is bringing the 328d to the USA and unveiling it at the New York International Auto Show. A bit down on power, 180 horses and 280ftlbs of torque, although diesel 4 bangers don't feel like 4 bangers. The 8 speed transmission and .26 drag coefficient (compared to our .29) make for 48mpg. Not bad at all! http://jalopnik.com/2014-bmw-328d-28...s-pe-461114336 |

Passing on this, waiting for the 535d. I understand why the 328(320)d is here, but meh...not excited.

Our "problem" with this 328d is that we are hopelessly spoiled by the 335d. Unless all we care about is better mileage.

My Realtor plans on grabbing the 328d Touring when it comes in August.
I am more than happy to wait for a gently loved 535d in a couple of years. Last edited by dzlmoose; 03-27-2013 at 03:58 PM.. |

I'm there with you. I'll of course test drive the 328d(err..320d) because I may be in the market to jump to VW (Passat TDi??) when the time comes. If the 5-er comes in RWD than I'll have to seriously consider it. If it comes in AWD only then I'll have to pass. I will never own an X-Drive.

Love how they said the 335d was "insanely overpowered."

I would love for them to stop dicking around and make a 335d in a 6spd manual.

The possibility of seeing that combo stateside is virtually nil.

That's going to depend on whether or not it's still the M57, I think. My guess, though, is that it won't, and that Terry will probably not take the time to make an alternative for the 328d.

The silver lining in the 328d news in this is that as long as one can not buy a new 3 Series with a 3.0 diesel, the resale value of E90 diesels should be strong. -Mike

If you want performance, it will be the 335. If you want economy it will be the 328d. The 328d could be built with a manual, but it probably won't be. If you haven't noticed the demand for manuals is continually dropping as is the models that have them. |

That might be nice for city driving and city mileage, i really like our 6 speed and I think its a perfect match. You really can't gear our car lower on the highway.
Yeah, that line made me smile! I love reading reviews about our car and how there never is a bad thing to say about it. Just how much people love it. Our resale value is already doing pretty damn good! |

Re:
A bit down on power, 180 horses and 280ftlbs of torque, Years ago I owned an '85 535i with a complete Zender kit, Bilstein sport kit, Dinan chip, etc. From the factory, the car had 182 hp and 213 lb ft of torque and weighed ~3200 lbs. The E28 was smaller than my E90. That car went like stink! I hardly feel that the 2.0L will be "down on power" with 25% more than the old E28 - and 48 MPG to boot! We'll be picking up a 328d Touring in a couple of years... |

Dzlmoose, that urea location on the 328d should have just been common sense on our cars as well. It's as if the location of it was an afterthought on the 335d and then someone came out with the "awesome" location of it.
