engine fan not activating?

Don't know if this is a problem. But, after driving my E90 335i for an hour with > 80 F outside temp, I'd expect the fan to come on. It never seems to activate. So what conditions are supposed to trigger the fan? (I do hear the oil pump, however.)

OK, can someone tell me if their engine fan ever comes on after engine is off?
