My point of view would be skewed as I did a lot of the maintenance myself so I save on labor. But the car will need no major items for a long time. Just fluid changes and valve adjustments. I'd say 1500 a year should be more than enough if you go to reasonable shops or forum members who do the work. If you can DIY (IMO the E46 is very DIY friendly) then it's much less.
