brakes question

So i had the service light was showing with xx miles left to check the brake pads...
so today i tried to reset it (I did not inspect the pads yet, its raining outside)
and as soon as i reset, i restart my car and the red car on the lift came out sayiong that i have to change my brake pads, and the B R A K E on the instrument clusetr is ON.
I did not replace the pads yet i will check them asap!
But my question is that the service due is based on the sensor or the mileage?

What if the pads are good?
should i try to just change the sensors?
and reset it again?

please help me

(sorry for my bad English)

The combination of lights you have means the wear sensor has been tripped.

One or both sensors have reached it end. Physically check/inspect both inner and outer pads on both front and rear. I'm positive that at least one of your sensors is touching the rotor (replace pad and senor... maybe rotor depending on condition).
