The old Porsches are the reason I've never bothered looking at them before, I find them a bit ugly tbh, much prefer the new ones and the potential cost of maintaining an old performance car and MOT's again ...... no thanks. Suppose it depends whether you actually drive anywhere all the time and rely on the car for work etc.
Don't want to hear that nasty MOT word til next year

Ugly?! They are gorgeous, completely sublime but beauty is in the eye of the beholder as they say!

Classic Cars are less trouble IMHO (though I have had bad experiences with newish ones) simple mechanics, easy enough to fix, require general ongoing maintenance, parts are usually cheapish too.

Yep you have the dreaded MOT once a year which mostly isn't a major problem if you've kept up maintenance over the year.

On a new £70k ++ car you are always going to loose loads of money. £12k is VAT for a start!!

My dad sold his 997s after 2.5 yrs back to an OPC with half book miles on the clock. £73k new I got £53.5k back for a mint condition car. I phoned around about 10 OPCs and top independent Porsche dealers - Camtune, Paragon, etc and then the specialists like Bramley. This was 9 months ago before the latest economic environment has kicked in so these prices would not stand nowadays but gives a flavour of what a car like this costs to own for a short period of time. FYI, most people were bidding £49 to £51 for the car and I had 3 hungry buyers who bid up to the £53.5. Clincher was a the colour black/black and 'reasonable' spec.

Therefore Private I may of got £56k but did not need the hassle of time wasters on this value of car.

OPC put it up for £59,500 needed a service, and the Porsche approved check, 1 yr warrenty and alignment check.

Buy a 997S today and do 20k in 3yrs. My gut feeling is an OPC would give you somewhere around £40k back for it at the end and private £2 to £3k more. In the current climate I would expect a discount up front even though it's a new model out.

When I was your age Porscha I may have agreed but I need a car to do many things on a daily basis. My other half likes his older cars but hardly does any annual mileage and they certainly are not Porsches with expensive parts price tags, although I dare say you can get non genuine spares for them now.

Besides for me no car I've driven so far comes close to a powerful motorbike for pure adrenalin rush and totally being part of the machine.

Helen is it not more to do with the throb of the machine (how rude, but i couldnt resist)

On topic old porsches where lethal. Try and extract a modicum of performance out of them and you'll be in a headge backwards. Definatly not for me. Like the idead of a993 turbo 4 though.

Not rude Steve - just apt perhaps. Surely if one is sitting astride a throbbing machine as opposed to sitting in a throbbing machine, the throbbing effect is far greater.

What was the O/T?

...but not the driver aids of the 996 or 997.....which I think was the point..

As for the "value" thing....I wouldnt be relying on forecourt prices at OPC's as a reliable indicator......

Or pointless

Once one manufacturer starts with driver aids, the rest will follow. Then we have the situation that the vast majority of cars on the road have the latest technology in safety. If I want to feel totally vulnerable again, I'll buy another motorbike. End of.

Yes i agree, a 997 turbo is an everyday supercar.

I think A M3 is more desirable than a normal 997
