Maintenance Fluid Changes

Hey guys,

At what intervals should fluid changes such as coolant, manual tranismission fluid, differential fluid and brake fluid be changed?

does anyone have info on these maintenance requirements post warranty and are any of them covered under CPO which i still have?

Should i take it to the dealer or someone like Nixon automotive?

My 2007 335 sport package MT is at 80,000km

thanks!

Coolant should be changed every 3-4 years (BMW dealer does this for about $120 CDN), power steering fluid 3-4 years (about $100 CDN), and brake fluid every 3 years (not sure about cost), although the computer recommends 2 years for safety. Your CPO warranty does not cover any of this.

I don't believe dealers do fluid changes for the differential and transmission, so you need to bring it to Nixon, which is a very popular shop from what I've heard. You should definitely them out especially at this age and mileage. I would recommend getting OEM fluids, but you need to research which are the correct fluids for the MT. As for the differential fluid, it can be found at Land Rover dealer, part # LRN7581 (Castrol SAF-XO), you will need 2 bottles (335i requires 1.2L).

Once you got the MT and diff fluids, bring them to Nixon and let us know how it goes.

Cool

Do the brake fluid every two year since we are dealing with salt in the winter.
I usually go by km not year but only time can tell.

I'm also starting to think of the diff and tranny fluid, I'm now approaching 100,000km (just 5k to go), and realize it might be the right time. Shifting is still smooth as butter, though, so I'm still debating it (at least for MT fluid).

Does anyone know how much it would cost to get the MT fluid and diff fluid changed?
(I have an xi). Also, what would be a good Indy shop to get this done at. (in toronto)

Probably $200-300 for labor for both diff and MT.

Make sure you research the correct fluids to use (diff oil found in my previous post), and bring your own oil. The last thing you want is for the indy shop to use some generic oil... because you would be better off NOT changing the oil.

Was told that Redline was good to use also.

You could use the Redline oil with the same weight, but then again won't break wallet to get the OEM Castrol oil because you only need 1L (non-335i) or 1.2L (335i)... actually I haven't done a price check, but I'm guessing about $20/bottle at LR. Whether you're willing to use a non-approved and non-tested oil is up to you.

This was posted in other threads, check out these maintenance schedules

E90 Maintenance schedule

BMW dealership shops will use the correct fluids and do the job properly, they will also do a quick inspection and spot any trouble areas like bushings, joints, etc. CPO only covers major components not fluids or maintenance. If you call ahead most will comp you a new BMW courtesy car.

Check your CBS, and get anything else done that is close to its service date, if you are around 50,000+ miles and have never had your transmission fluid changed now is the time to get that done as well, it is jet black after 50k. I do not know how much it costs for an automatic fluid change as it requires a filter as well.

If you are 100,000+ then have the differential fluid changed as well, you can change it at 50k like in the schedule, I did, but it was very clean after 50k.

The parts I have not changed (I will wait for them to leak, fray, give an error code or clog before changing them) are: Water Pump, Fuel Filter, Oxygen Sensor, Accessory Drive belts and will change the coolant hoses as they leak or will change them all when the water pump fails at over 100k as they will be over ten years old at that time.

BMW Canada has some maintenance costs listed here

Parts Estimate:
Brake fluid $20
Coolant $20
(Manual) transmission fluid $62
Diff Fluid $58

Labor:
BMW Service Clinic (inspection) $0
DME & KOMBI update: $128.64
Manual Transmission Fluid Change: $53.60
Differential Fluid Change: $53.60
Courtesy Car: $0

Total Labor and Parts:
Manual Transmission Fluid Change: $115.60
Differential Fluid Change: $111.60
DME/KOMI update: $128.64

Not here in Victoria, BC, apparently the software is quite expensive. It was cheaper than I though it would be to update both the DME and KOMBI at the dealership.

I did coolant and differential flush along with power steering. Makes a huge difference.
Maybe plugs soon.

Software updates, DME controls the engine and the KOMBI controls everything else.

Yes, brake fluid absorbs moisture! Please bleed your brakes and avoid certain doom.

Change every 2 years, or yearly if you are a fanatic like me.

Hmm...im assuming diff fluid change and power steering fluid change are a bit more expensive on the 335?

Anyone have any experience from Nixon? I hear they are good but prices are not cheap...200 for an oil change.

Lots of time on the track....

It's being changed as we speak, along with all the recalls.
