Also keep in mind some of the biggest issues with these turbos are the internal wastegates components, and replacing them is very difficult and comes at a high cost for the custom parts. Just bringing it up as a simple CHRA rebuild is about 20% of the issues with these things, which is why buying completely new units from the dealer makes a whole lot of sense in a lot of cases. My $.02.

Rob,

Do you offer any rebuilt units as stock equivalent, as if you are fine with stock turbos it should be the lowest priced option?

At $400 a piece it is still cheaper than new replacement turbos. I wonder though if they do upgrade / replace waste gates?

Not a single one of these is dong anything but cleaning your turbos, installing a 20 dollar parts kit and balancing. No upgraded internals, no upgraded wastegate parts. If you didn't have wastegate rattle or boost loss on your first cycle you can guarantee you will on the second. As far as buying a used CHRA with unknown miles on it and installing that in your car. You might as well play Russian roulette with your install money. Bottom line you get what you pay for. You want a quality turbo with upgraded parts designed to last that's what we offer. You want to save some money and gamble with used parts and the stock wastegates that have been on your car since it was new, go with the other options. It's pretty simple.

The problem is that the internal wastegate components are often so fubared that they are not worth salvaging in favor of some of these better deals that can be found on completely brand new OEM units. So have not really entertained it, it is just not what I would do personally. However, I have had numerous guys just looking to get their car back on the road as cheaply as possible who buy these used CHRA's for next to nothing and be happy as can be. For most others, just a lot of labor to take chances.

I'd say $325 for a rebuilt CHRA is a fair deal though, I just can't get past spending that ratio in cost of completely new turbos and cut out such a large part of the problem (wastegate internals and the less costly actuators). In my eyes, buck up a little, go completely new.

Thanks for clarification, I guess once my stock ones go out I can either get Vargas replacements for $1099 or OEMs at $1108 for lower priced options.

I do wanna point out upgraded shaft could induce more lag depending on design .. there's a reason our turbine spools up easy, just my 2cents

Yep, looks like best option is to replace as for $100-$200 more a piece there is no point to mess around.

Don't overlook that most of us are pushing our stock turbos to the upper limits of their efficiency and durability with simple tunes. While some things may add more lag, or be heavier; we can't fairly compare unless we compare stock to stock and tuned to tuned. When stock, the stock components are great and do not have any huge detectable lag, but they also die out at higher power levels. I can personally say that the only thing that really added lag was my intercooler. Catless downpipes fixed that.

Another thing people tend to forget is durability, and that's why I opted for stg 1s initially. Some components are inherent weak points in these turbos, and the waste gate is known for being weak, and in higher power applications like FBO and Meth, longevity upgrades like the thrust upgrade and overbuilt waste gates are good insurance. That's why if you killed turbos, you should upgrade. The rebuilt ones are gonna be on borrowed time if you don't change your driving style.

No stock replacement or stage 1 turbos have upgraded turbine wheel or shaft. That's what makes stock / stage 1 VS stage 2 different. So not sure what you are referring to.

Following for info. My seals are good for the moment, but my WG's are worn for sure. I like the idea of the rebuilt WG's with upgraded materials a lot more than throwing in new OEM's with the shitty WG materials. I'm still on the fence about upgrading the internals vs just keeping stock parts though, just because my car probably wont ever see any more than 400whp

Let's correct some old info here. Yes the wastegates can get shot and need replacement. No they don't cost $1000s to replace. You can buy the upgraded wastegate parts on eBay for $100 from turbo lab of America
http://www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/111856454441
And here is the DIY video or you can pay a shop to do them for probably $100.

At one time you tried to scare me with the wastegates costing $1000s to replace, just not the case.

I think it's great you sell good CHRAs on eBay ($35/piece) to rebuild turbos easily on the cheap, more people should definitely buy those from you and do that rather than drop $1000+ on new stock turbos and in my opinion most of the time replacing the CHRA get rid of the smoked turbo seals, not the wastegate replacement.

I suggest don't waste your money & time on Vargas VTT product, when there is a problem Tony will 1st try to push the fault to you & your car follow by other nonsense. And if you send your turbo for inspection/repair they can get months to just asnwer you (we will get it inspect ASAP).

Can you post the link where you read that stock OEM turbos being replaced under warranty have upgraded internals? Thanks.

Sorry sir do not. Actually ended up servicing them all starting October 2016, had well over 300 units (150+ sets) of loose CHRA's built up by that point taking up shelf space. Long story short, over the past 2 years, we've sold them all off in the form of RB OEM N54 rebuilds. Perfect product, no issues had with them to date, just no more left at this time (used or refurbished). We will continue to refurb them as inventory increases but availability will never be what it was prior.
